The Position


Under the general supervision of the Public Works Supervisor, the duties of the Public Works General Labourer include various manual labour tasks, predominately outside.

You will operate hand and power tools and equipment like lawnmowers, edgers/string trimmers, chainsaws, and leaf blowers. You will work around heavy machinery like, field mowers, backhoes, and cranes. Common tasks include maintaining or building roads, parks, sewage systems, cleaning, repairing/building/installing Nation structures and more.

This position requires you to safely and responsibly operate the Nation's equipment and vehicles.

  • Assist in the preparation, construction, and maintenance of Nation facilities.
  • Operate light and heavyduty trucks to pick up and deliver materials/supplies.
  • Perform basic carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, cement, and asphalt work.
  • Perform yard and field maintenance, including mowing, edging/trimming and fertilizing fields.
  • Assist or be responsible for garbage collection from public waste bins, parks and the community.
  • Repair and maintain ditches, drains, roads, signs, sidewalks, and medians.
  • Plant, trim, and clear fallen trees and prepare firewood.
  • Perform pre and postvehicle safety inspections and report any necessary repairs or concerns.
  • Responsible for the safe, effective use of the equipment to perform all jobs.
  • Coordinate the maintenance and repairs of vehicles.
  • Assist with construction projects and paving preparation.
  • Maintain roads in good condition for safe, hazardfree driving by grading, ditching along roadsides, slope trimming, backfilling and filling washouts caused by heavy rain and winter breakup.
  • Clean streets; hauling, loading and unloading gravel.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum Grade 10 or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and clean abstract.
  • Flexibility to respond to callouts.
  • Occupational First Aid Level I is an asset.
  • WHMIS Certificate is an asset.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working in general construction, landscaping, and maintenance work
  • Knowledge of the community and city is required.
  • Respect for, sensitivity towards as well as knowledge and understanding of shíshálh culture and traditions.
  • Knowledge and previous experience operating various pieces of equipment, such as small tractors, chainsaws, jackhammers, compressors, tamping machines, snow blowers, lawnmowers and saws.
