Position Overview:
This seasonal (April – November) position provides support for the restoration and management work of the Arboretum and McKnight Prairie. This position is on an "as-needed" basis, and works primarily out of doors.Compensation:
The expected starting hourly range for this position is between $22.40 and $23.10. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:
The employee will participate in the prescribed burn program, remove invasive plant species and undesirable vegetation, prepare sites for burning or planting, assist with planting and assist with plant inventory. This will require use of equipment including chain saws and brush saws and herbicide application.
Additional Job Responsibilities:
Seed collecting, equipment repair and maintenance, supervise Arboretum student workers as needed when Arboretum Manager is unavailable
Supervision Received and Exercised:
The position is supervised by the Arboretum Manager and supervises no other regular employees. The Assistant Manager will receive weekly direction on specific tasks from the Manager but timing and exact implementation of the tasks is at the discretion of the Assistant.
The Assistant is expected to consult with the Manager if a project cannot be completed as originally described. The employee will supervise student workers when the Arboretum Manager is unavailable.
Education/Experience/Skills:
Required:
Identification of native and invasive plant species. Control of non-native or undesirable plant species. Knowledge and experience with operation of small power equipment. Knowledge and experience with herbicide application using hand application.
Preferred:
Experience and training in prescribed fire. Federal S130/S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire course.
