Executive Council works to ensure effective strategic planning and coordinated policy development and communications across government, engages Albertans and the broader global community, and promotes a vibrant and innovative public service.


In addition to policy, protocol, communications and Cabinet functions, Executive Council includes Intergovernmental Relations, which develops strategies on issues of importance to Alberta and Canada - with its partners, clients and stakeholders - to address challenges and grow opportunities.

This unit also coordinates Alberta's leadership and participation within the Canadian federation in pursuit of a federal system that best serves the needs of Albertans and Canadians.

Role Responsibilities:

We are seeking an agile leader that thrives at creating sustainable investment strategies, including assessment of market expectations around sustainability practices, and related opportunities and risks.

You are also knowledgeable about sustainability reporting requirements and environmental, social and governance standards that could affect investment into the province.


As the Director, Sustainable Investments, you will advance sustainability practices within Alberta's industries, assessing opportunities and risks, and utilizing research, data, anecdotal information to provide leadership on SERI priorities.


Key Responsibilities:


1.

Knowledge Building Around Sustainable Investment:


  • Monitor and report on rules and standards being developed nationally and internationally that impact capital deployment in Alberta.
  • Market expectations around sustainability practices of industries in Alberta, highlighting related opportunities and risks.
  • Identify new opportunities and initiatives to advance Alberta's transition strategy.
  • Collaborate with other ministries to maintain a list of public and private projects aligning with Alberta's transition strategy, promoting these opportunities to national and international investors.

Engagement and Advocacy:


  • Engage industry and governments to develop awareness and adoption of Alberta's decarbonization ambitions.
  • Support Alberta's Carbon Neutrality 2050 aspirations across government ministries.
  • Maintain active relationships with industry through associations, professional service firms, and banks.
  • Source research and data to shape Alberta's transition and Carbon Neutrality goals.

Communication and Messaging:


  • In collaboration with communications and public engagement colleagues, craft messaging materials and campaigns for stakeholders.
  • Develop an inventory of communications needs for target audiences.
  • Implement feedback mechanisms to gauge messaging effectiveness.
  • Manage digital assets and deployment for reinforcing Alberta's sustainability narrative.
  • Develop reports on sustainable investment trends for government dissemination.

Relationship Building:


  • Develop key relationships with ministry executives, directors, and crossministry colleagues.
  • Cultivate partnerships with financial institutions and sustainable finance organizations.

Leadership and Team Development:


  • Provide leadership and coaching to team and contract staff.
  • Establish unit direction, priorities, and goals in alignment with organizational plans.
  • Mentor staff to deliver on project outcomes.
  • Resolve performance and operational issues.
  • Identify and address learning needs for staff development.

To be successful in this role, you will need to have:

  • The ability to read, interpret, and produce financial statements/reports,
  • Exceptional communication skills,
  • A depth of knowledge surrounding sustainable finance and investments both nationally and internationally; and
  • Strong networking skills.
