The Canadian Press is looking for a new leader for its French-language news service, based in Montreal.

In this exciting role, the editor-in-chief will be responsible for the operations and content strategy of CP's French service.

Reporting directly to the President, the Editor-in-Chief will become a key member of the senior management team, providing executive oversight of CP's French-language news services on print, online, video and broadcast platforms across Canada.


On a strategic level, the role is a key driver of CP's long term strategies for news and content services, working closely with other members of the senior executive team to drive technological and product innovations.

On a day-to-day operational level, the role is responsible for ensuring the content produced by CP's editorial service is journalistically sound, compelling and relevant to the needs of CP's wide customer base.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide strategic business leadership and insight with a particular focus on evolving CP's news and content strategy to meet the changing needs of CP's customers.
  • Lead all aspects of a modern multiplatform news service.
  • Develop a partnership with the editorinchief of CP's English service to maximize editorial resources and synchronize news coverage plans.
  • Work closely with other members of the executive team on crossdepartmental initiatives that will ensure CP's success. For example, you will help develop and operationalize CP's news and content technology strategies and actively contribute to business development and sales efforts by meeting with current and potential clients.
  • Play a lead role in the creation of new and evolving products and services to address customer needs, helping to grow and diversify CP's revenue.
  • Be a senior leader in the Quebec and/or Canadian journalism communities, advocating for The Canadian Press and quality, independent journalism more broadly in public discourse.
  • Liaise with governments, advocacy groups, professional associations and key clients, frequently acting as the "face" of the organization at conferences and other public events.
  • Ensure disciplined, effective management of newsroom expenses within established budgetary levels.
  • Provide strong, effective leadership to the editorial teams; create and implement an inspiring vision for CP's Frenchlanguage news teams.
  • Grow and nurture the organization's journalistic talent.
  • Foster and sustain strong, collaborative relationships with other senior executives and staff throughout CP, and with external stakeholders (customers, owners, governments, professional associations, union representatives, etc.)

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Significant experience, at senior leadership levels, in one or more leading news and content organizations in Canada or similar environments. Seen as a respected leader in the journalism community.
  • Demonstrated capability to contribute strategic insights, ideas and solutions based on an indepth understanding of the evolving news and content landscape.
  • Handson attitude; resultsdriven. Readiness to accept significant accountability for business results.
  • Strong relationship skills; able to foster effective, collaborative working relationships at all levels, including Board, owners, customers, business partners, peers, union representatives and staff.
  • Deep background in journalism, including knowledge of the newspaper, online and broadcast landscape.
  • Demonstrated commitment to journalistic quality, accuracy and integrity, and the important role of independent news media in a civil, democratic society.
  • Significant understanding of, and experience with, digital technology in the context of news and content.
  • Ability to manage a complex, "always on" news operation spread across multiple locations.
  • Solid understanding of the diverse Canadian sociopolitical landscape and the implications for a national news business.
  • Strong budgeting and cost management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills for both internal (staff) and external (client and public) communications.
  • A good peopleleader, providing leadership and motivation to editorial staff and more broadly throughout the business.
  • High level of executive maturity and judgment, adhering to the highest standard of ethics, integrity and professionalism.
  • University education in journalism or related field.
  • Fluency in French, and a strong competency in English.
