Reporting to the Director, Legal Services, you'll be responsible for providing legal advice and services in relation to AMA's legal matters, issues and liabilities.

    As a Insurance Defence Litigation Lawyer, you will serve as both Advocate and Advisor. As Advocates for AMA and its business units, the job leads the preparation of files, and may work with outside counsel or other professionals or experts to develop AMA's position. The job also handles or assists with large complex files or transactions and provides research and recommendations for further progress of the matter at hand.

  • WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Provide legal service for the Insurance Company's legal needs, primarily insurance defence litigation.
  • Conduct litigation files through pleadings, questionings, applications pre-trial conferences, mediations, JDRs, trials and appeals.
  • Advise clients on concerning business transactions, claim liability, defending lawsuits, or legal rights and obligations.
  • Interpret laws, rulings and regulations for AMA and business unit clients.
  • Analyze the probable outcome of files/cases, using knowledge of legal precedents.
  • Evaluate findings and developing strategies and arguments in preparation for presentation of cases or to negotiate a settlement.
  • Gather evidence through examining data/information, interviews, and reviewing documentation to ascertain the facts of the file/case and provide advice.
  • Represent AMA at tribunals or before government agencies.
  • Conduct research and analysis of legal problems to prepare legal briefs and opinions.
  • Negotiate settlements and agreements.
  • Confer with colleagues with specialties in appropriate areas of legal issue.
  • Search for and examine public and other legal records to write opinions.
  • Identify and work within department cost-effective, result-oriented strategies and processes.
  • Assess risks of proposed courses and action and presents alternatives.
  • WHAT YOU'VE DONE

  • You have a university law degree from a recognized Canadian Law School.
  • You have a minimum of 5 years of Litigation Experience either in-house or with a firm.
  • You have demonstrated competency in a specific area of law (insurance, employment law, contracts, mortgages, banking and insurance legislation/regulation).
  • You're a member in good standing of the Alberta Law Society.
  • You have solid technical grounding in legal research demonstrating an attention to detail combined with superior evaluative and analytical abilities.
  • Your legal writing skills are top-notch.
