Circuit Rider Trainer (CRT)

First Nations Technical Services Advisory Group (TSAG) provides technical services and training for Alberta First Nations in the Treaty 6, 7 and 8 Regions. TSAG is seeking a highly motivated individual to take on the responsibility of a fulltime Circuit Rider Trainer (CRT). This CRT position will work with multiple First Nations communities throughout the Grande Prairie, Peace River, Slave Lake area of Alberta, will report directly to the Circuit Rider Training Program Manager and will be responsible for planning, organizing and delivering a variety of mentoring and training for First Nation water and wastewater system operators.


Roles and Responsibilities include:


  • Develop and implement training and certification plans to build capacity and assist the system operator(s) to attain the level of certification required for their system(s).
  • Support operators to meet requirements for water and/or wastewater systems stipulated in relevant codes and regulations (including ISC protocols, Health Canada Guidelines, and Environment Canada's
    _Wastewater Systems Effluent regulations_.
  • Support operators in developing functional work plans or standard operating procedures (SOP's).
  • Troubleshoot and demonstrate how routine maintenance and repairs are conducted, and assist in the procurement and management of outside expertise when required for any difficult maintenance or repair activity.
  • Train system operators on the procedures required to conduct sampling and testing, record keeping and reporting.
  • Support and assist the operators in the development and/or implementation of Maintenance Management Plans (MMP's) and Emergency Response Plans (ERP's)
  • Participate in provision of 24/7 telephone technical support to First Nations as required.
  • Prepare and submit Site Visit Reports (SVR's) at the conclusion of each site visit and identify occupational health & safety training needs of operators.
  • Other duties as required.

Skills and Abilities, we're looking for include:

  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement a mentoring program by determining short
- and long-term objectives and by ensuring that the objectives of the mentoring program are met.

  • Ability to properly manage time while working independently.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written, must be able to communicate well enough to be able to teach and pass on their knowledge to others.
  • Possession of excellent troubleshooting and problemsolving skills.
  • Be able to provide input at the feasibility stage or design stage of a project as well as be able to participate in commissioning work.
  • Good understanding and use of computer software including Word processing, Excel spreadsheets, Power Point and internet communications.

Must be mechanically inclined.

  • MMP and ERP development and implementation experience would be an asset.

Additional Requirements:


  • Alberta Environment & Parks Certification with a minimum of
    Level II Water Treatment, Level II Water Distribution, Level II Wastewater Collection and Level II Wastewater Treatment certification;
  • Minimum of 7
    years' experience in water and wastewater field
  • Hold a minimum
    Valid Class 5 Vehicle Operators license and able to provide a clean driver abstract;
  • Willing to occasionally work on weekends to assist with system emergencies when they arise and travel throughout Alberta
  • This position will be
    based out of the Peace River/Slave Lake region, **and is a permanent fulltime position.
