Cooling Streams Forestry Technician

Starting Salary:
$45 000 to $55 000 prorated salary


Location:
Guelph, ON


Hours: 40 hrs/week; January 3, April 3, 2024, with opportunity for onboarding in December; Possibility of extension to fulltime, 1 year contract (renewable).

Our programs have a watershed focus and are implemented directly by staff and through the engagement of our local chapters, volunteers, and partners.

Our programs and projects focus on assessment, monitoring, and restoration work on freshwater systems, ensuring healthy water quality and quantity, healthy habitats, and healthy freshwater fish communities.


Trout Unlimited Canada is looking for an enthusiastic individual with a strong background in forestry to lead the implementation of our new Cooling Streams riparian tree planting program.

Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Forestry Technician will develop riparian tree planting plans, deploy resources, and mobilize volunteers with Indigenous and community groups to work with staff and local Chapters in Ontario and Alberta in delivering the program.


Responsibilities:


  • Develop plans for tree planting and invasive species removal on project sites
  • Help Chapters to identify sites and organize riparian tree planting events; Lead Chapter training events
  • Liaise with landowners, municipalities, nongovernment organizations, Indigenous, and community groups to access sites, acquire resources, and leverage tree planting work
  • Engage with Indigenous leaders about Traditional Ecological Knowledge and tree planting.
  • Help create tree planting guidelines and monitoring frameworks to distribute to partners
  • Create education materials, including blogs, reels, and social media posts

Additional Responsibilities if Funding Secured:


  • Manage a field crew and coordinate volunteers to plant native trees and shrubs
  • Help to trial a Buckthorn biocontrol
  • Coordinate and collaborate with TUC biologists and stream restoration teams during field season
  • Collect field data and prepare reports
  • Assist with community outreach activities and corporate workday events
  • Administrative tasks and other duties as needed

Qualifications

  • Experience or knowledge of urban forestry
  • Postsecondary degree or diploma in forestry, biology, environmental science, or natural resource management is preferred.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple demands in a dynamic environment.
  • Superior interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong organizational and timemanagement skills, attention to detail, and accuracy.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, familiarity with Arc GIS, and ability to learn and adapt to new software.
  • Dependable, flexible, and resourceful with excellent teamwork skills.
  • Knowledge about freshwater ecology or water conservation is an asset.
  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations is an asset.
  • Full Driver's License, with good driving record.
  • Chainsaw Operator's Training & Certification.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR certification required.
