Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.
Position Overview:
The Genetics Counsellor works as a member of the laboratory team, providing information and technical support to clients, laboratory staff and other healthcare providers.
The Genetics Counsellor is responsible for the day-to-day triaging of patient specimens, organizing and facilitating out-of-province testing requests, and tracking of specimens, results, and reports.
Experience:
- Previous related experience in a medical setting including counselling preferred.
- Laboratory experience considered an asset.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate):
- Master of Science degree in Genetics or Master of Science/Master of Arts in Genetic Counselling granted by a recognized genetic counselling program.
Certification/Licensure/Registration:
- Board eligible or board certified by the Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors (CAGC), and/or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) required.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Specialized knowledge of clinical genetics required.
- Knowledge of laboratory molecular genetics, cytogenetics, and genomics required.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both written and oral.
- Windows computer environment required.
- Microsoft Office programs required.
- Organizational skills.
- Counselling and teaching skills.
- Communication skills to handle professional interactions with laboratory staff, medical staff and other healthcare providers from both within and outside Diagnostic Services, Shared Health.
- Ability to demonstrate independent knowledge seeking behaviours.
- Ability to perform duties as described.
- Strong commitment to customer satisfaction and quality health service.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a healthcare team.
