SPECIAL EVENTS & PLACEMAKING LEAD


The South Granville Business Improvement Association is looking for a Special Events and Placemaking Lead to oversee streetscape, activations, and events.

As the Special Events and Placemaking Lead you will develop and implement programming in South Granville public spaces, ensure that the plazas, streetscape, and contracted work such as micro cleaning and graffiti etc, are maintained and then are programmed in an interesting and engaging way.

This is a position for someone who is passionate about community building, placemaking, urban livability, transforming public spaces into safe, attractive and fun places where people want to be.

We are looking for detail oriented, hard working and creative people who are passionate about making South Granville more fun.

You will organize events at the newly designed South Granville Plaza West by HCMA, the brilliant architects behind Downtown Vancouver's Pink Alley Oop

South Granville has served the City of Vancouver as a high street shopping district for over 100 years.

Not only are we a shopping street, we are a neighbourhood with a rich history and strong identity and about 50,000 residents within 1km.

We boast the largest concentration of lifestyle stores and boutiques in the City and our community is home to the beloved Stanley Theatre providing award-winning live theatre 200 days a year.

The South Granville Subway Line is expected to open in 2026 and our station is expected to be one of the busiest stops along the alignment.


The South Granville BIA is geographically defined by the boundaries of Granville Street from 5th Avenue to 16th Avenue (N/S) and to the laneways on the east and west side of Granville.

We also represent businesses on the south side of Broadway between Granville and Fir.

We represent

401 member businesses and 115 property owners

$1.1 billion in assessed commercial property value

$800,000 BIA annual budget


Our Mandate


To help make South Granville the destination of choice for Metro Vancouver residents for shopping, dining, entertainment, and other services; and to act as a catalyst for vibrancy and prosperity in the area through advocacy, marketing, events, improvements and co-operative initiatives.


Roles and Responsibilities
Operations //

The South Granville BIA oversees the assets of the neighbourhood to ensure an enjoyable visitor experience.

  • Oversees the various maintenance contracts.
  • Conducts periodic audits for public realm deficiencies.
  • Builds relationships with members to address their concerns and courage better public realm enhancements
  • Ensures plazas, parks, trees, sidewalks, neighbourhood signage, poles, street furniture, plantings, banners, holiday lights, are well maintained and submit requests for repairs as needed.
  • Assists with new street enhancement concepts such as banners, murals, flower baskets, lights, etc;
Placemaking and Events //

The SGBIA will be piloting placemaking projects such as parklets, farmers markets and events.

  • Plans, promotes, executes events on behalf of the association such as member meetings, special events, marketing promotions and the Annual General Meeting;
  • Executes sponsorship agreements with partners, festivals and events.
  • Responsible for researching, planning, and executing other placemaking opportunities throughout the year;
Administration //

The SGBIA is a small office so it's all hands on deck. Office administration support is part of this role.

  • Provides support to the Executive Director as required;
  • Daily admin work (general inquiries, correspondence, office administration, mail, phone);
  • Assists with liaising with SGBIA membership, City of Vancouver, and other stakeholders.
  • Helps ensure the member database is up to date.
  • Coordinates mailouts to membership and stakeholders.
  • Research for contractors and suppliers.

Requirements and Skills Essential to the Position

  • 3+ years experience or Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Arts Management, or Events Management.
  • Up to date on trends in Placemaking and public space activation.
  • Able to develop and measure metrics to determine program success.
  • Identify funding opportunities in public and private partners and grant opportunities.
  • Professional and friendly with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Mature, creative, reliable, energetic and highly motivated.

Effective planner, extremely organized and maintains attention to detail.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, Google Drive and the ability to quickly learn new web-based software

  • Able to think critically, handle multiple projects simultaneously, and meet performance deadlines.

The ability to work independently without supervision.
