Summary:

Reporting to the Manager or designate, the Porter-Ward Aide transports patients of all ages with a wide variety and complexity of illness and injury, including deceased patients, between various areas within the hospital.

Duties include transporting/escorting patients, equipment and supplies to and from required areas using stretchers, wheelchairs and beds and assisting nursing and technical staff with the lifting and transferring of patients, as required.

Maintains supplies for designated areas by stocking equipment, cupboards, shelves and carts, and cleans equipment and storage areas as required.

Picks up and delivers equipment, supplies, specimens, blood products and other items as assigned. Operates a facsimile and/or photocopier as required.

Qualifications / Skills and Education:
Education, Training, and Experience

Grade 12 plus one year's recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Duties and Responsibilities: 1.Transports patients to and from required areas as assigned by methods such as receiving assignment through Dispatcher, pager or as specified in daily portering schedule, organizing workload pursuant to individual patients' requirements, selecting required equipment such as oxygen or stretcher as indicated on requisition or through verbal direction, and moving patients from various locations by either walking or wheeling utilizing mechanical aides such as specialty beds, mobilizers, wheelchairs and stretchers to ensure prompt arrival at specified location.

Provides support to patients by methods such as supplying blankets when requested and notifying nursing and/or technical staff of any problems or patient concerns.

Assists the patient care team with mobilization of patients, as directed, by lifting and transferring patients on and off stretchers and wheelchairs, following prescribed safe techniques and lifting practices such as utilizing mechanical lifts and/or slide boards as required.


  • Transports a variety of equipment/accessories to and from required areas as assigned such as I.V. poles. Removes used and excess equipment and supplies in accordance with established procedure by performing duties such as returning equipment/accessories to appropriate areas, disposing of used supplies such as soiled linens, and sending reusable equipment to Medical Device Reprocessing department as required.
  • Transports deceased patients by obtaining morgue stretcher, proceeding to the ward/area as notified, assisting nursing staff with transferring deceased on to the stretcher as directed, moving deceased to the morgue, transferring deceased onto empty rack in cooler utilizing portable cadaver scissor lifts, and logging information such as time of arrival, patient's name, ward, and body tag number for records.
  • Monitors various supplies such as linens by methods such as daily reviewing core supplies to identify depleting stock and notifying appropriate personnel of need to reorder, as required. Completes paperwork for additional stock. Replenishes items as applicable, by unpacking supplies upon receipt and storing in appropriate areas. Keeps supply cupboards, carts, shelves, patient areas or change cubicles clean and neat by tidying up when required to ensure space is kept clear and debris does not accumulate.
  • Maintains oxygen supplies by methods such as checking oxygen tanks to ensure they are replenished, mounting regulators and attaching oxygen masks onto new tanks, checking suctions are clean and available on all stretchers, re-filling liquid oxygen strollers and checking to ensure equipment is functioning and available for use, as required.
  • Cleans wheelchairs, stretchers, linen carts and equipment by methods such as replacing linen on stretchers, replacing disposable liner on suction container, and spot-cleaning equipment using disinfectant solution; notifies appropriate personnel of malfunctioning equipment and/or completes maintenance requisition as directed, and sends equipment to Maintenance/Bio Medical Engineering for repair to ensure equipment is maintained in safe working order.
  • Transports items such as drugs, supplies, patients' personal possessions, x-rays, charts, admission slips, equipment, blood products, and specimens to and from specified areas as directed by nursing staff or technical staff by picking up and delivering items according to established department schedules/ward aide book. Picks up and drops off stat orders from Pharmacy and Laboratory. Locates missing equipment such as wheelchairs, lakeside carts, stretchers, and IV poles.
  • Performs clerical duties as required such as answering telephones, arranging additional portering support, operating a facsimile
