KEY FUNCTION:
Accountable for the day to day operations of the frontline security team (staff and contracted guards) at all Health Sciences North (HSN) sites.
Demonstrate a 'lead by example' attitude and provide guidance, leadership and support to subordinates and exemplify the vision, mission and values of HSN.
REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Manager, Emergency Preparedness and Security Services.
DUTIES:
- Lead the Security Services team.
- Act as the primary point of contact for emergency situations.
- Respond to all security calls as the primary lead, including all emergency code notices.
- Function as the Incident Commander during fire emergencies while liasing with the Greater Sudbury Fire Services.
- Monitor the safety of HSN patients and visitors, and develop/adapt plans as required.
- Assist management and maintain confidentiality of sensitive staff information of internal investigations, incidents, parking violations and escorts of relieved staff members at the direction of the Manager of Emergency Preparedness and Security Services.
- Attend each site at least once per shift to perform job requirements and team check in's.
- Ensure Security Guards (including Contracted Security Guards) comply with established policies, procedures, Standard Operating Procedures, post orders etc.
- Ensure any unfilled shifts are identified and assist the Security Supervisor in managing staffing, sick calls after hours, etc.
- Coordinate with units and contract Security Company for additional security requests (i.e. one to one patient watch/extra security on a unit, etc.) and contract shift replacement.
- Assist the Security Advisor in providing security specific orientation, training, and positional training.
- Monitor, record, and report concerns related to performance of Security Guards to the Security Supervisor.
- Assist with the review and monitoring of departmental metrics.
- Assist in the implementation and evaluation of new procedures and/or technology in the security environment.
- Maintain a high level of customercentered service that reflects the established training standard.
- Support the resolution of complaints and concerns in a courteous, effective, cooperative, prompt and nondefensive manner.
- Assess problematic situations and initiate effective interventions through collaboration with team members, internal and/or external partners.
- Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Oversee the work of others in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations, and HSN policies.
- Determine and align improvement projects with HSN's Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
- Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
- Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Minimum of a two (2) year Diploma in Law and Security, Police Foundations, Corrections, Community Justice or Protection, or Security and Investigation or equivalent.
- Current Ontario Security License (Ministry of Community and Correctional Services Certification for Security Guard as regulated by the PSISA (Private Security & Investigative Services Act)).
- Valid First Aid and CPR level C is required.
- Ministry of Labour "Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 5 Steps" training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of two (2) years' experience working as a Security Guard.
- Minimum of two (2) years' experience working in a Supervisory role.
- Experience in a health care setting is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Mental Health Act (MHA) and relevant forms.
- Demonstrated in depth working knowledge of the Private Security and Investigative Services Act Code of Conduct.
- Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
- Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook).
- Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
