Matheson Constructors is a leading construction firm focused on delivering exceptional construction management, general contracting, design-build and public-private partnerships.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Project Controller to support the ongoing and effective full-cycle accounting management of current construction project in alignment with operational and contractual requirements.

This role regularly collaborates with Project Manager to assess project costs, profitability and performance.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Complete project set-up and job closings in Accounting software
  • Update, maintain and report on project budgets and cash forecasts on a regular basis.
  • Conduct job cost analysis by analyzing project budget variances and performance indexing. Identify reasons for variances, issues and trends. Propose recommendations to resolve or mitigate.
  • Perform full cycle accounts receivable duties including reconciliation and timely collections.
  • Investigate and resolve billing discrepancies and misapplied payments
  • Accumulate, interpret and analyze financial data for monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
  • Work with AP to ensure accurate and timely daily/weekly accounts payable processing for projects
  • Act as liaison with operational divisions, providing the respective Project Managers with information (both financial and nonfinancial) to assist them in managing their projects.
  • Working closely and cooperatively with colleagues and business unit managers to ensure adherence to all accounting and finance policies and procedures as per the Company and project contracts.
  • Provide leadership to junior project accountants and accounting clerks
  • Coordinate yearend audit file preparation and assist in any other regulatory audits with external auditors.
  • Provide adhoc financial analysis, research and reports for management as requested.
  • Prepares correspondence, reports, forms, and specialized documents as required;
  • Record journal entries, maintain and reconcile general ledger, job cost and other monthly reports
  • Perform timely monthend close and ensure recording all pertinent transactions including setting up monthly accruals
  • Comply with internal controls at all times
  • Assist in preparation of monthly financial reporting packages to senior management
  • Navigating through and managing various systems/software to support project
  • Remit HST
  • Proficiency in project management software, Procore preferred
  • Overall review of general ledger accounts
  • Preparation of monthly financials and WIP
  • Any other related duties as may be required to meet department and Company deadlines

Position Requirements

EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree/College diploma in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration and a minimum of three (7) years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience (Construction Industry Preferred).
  • CPA Designation

WORKING LOCATION

  • This role will be based at Head Office in Aurora and On-Site in East Gwillimbury
