Characteristic Duties:
Under the direct supervision of the Chief Mechanical Officer.

  • Conduct routine maintenance on specialized equipment (e.g., fire trucks, generators, pagers, basic firefighting equipment, including hose repairs, Jaws of Life, pumps).
  • Perform vehicle and equipment checks in accordance with City of Greater Sudbury (CGS) and Fire Services policies and procedures. Prepare and update appropriate documentation as required.
  • Drive Fire Services vehicles in a safe and secure manner, in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and CGS and Fire Services policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate the condition of trucks and equipment to ensure they are in good working order and state of repair, are operational and meet required standards.
  • Assist in the technical testing of fire equipment (e.g., ladders, pumps, aerials, gas monitoring devices, Jaws of Life) as required.
  • Prepare and maintain records of testing, repair, replacement, and maintenance for audit and control purposes in accordance with policies and standards required by the Fire Services.
  • Perform the duties of the fire ground technician at the training centre (e.g., the confined space simulator, the flash over unit and the smoke tower).
  • Responsible for the maintenance of adequate supplies, review and maintain inventory of supplies, prepare orders within budgeted amounts, and check packing receipts. Fill orders for supplies requested from fire stations. Ensure the timely delivery of supplies, mail, and equipment to all fire stations.
  • Maintain, test, and certify all municipal selfcontained breathing apparatus (SCBA); track SCBA maintenance and repairs; document all SCBA testing as required by applicable codes; fit test personnel as required by National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
  • Order, receive, and issue SCBA components; work with vendors; perform inventory checks, coordinate warranty repairs of SCBA and compressors; service, repair and test air samples from all fixed air compressors on a quarterly basis; document all testing required by applicable codes.
  • Attend technical training sessions as required.
  • Attend at emergency scenes to assist as required.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with federal and provincial legislation, GCG and Fire Services Policies and Procedures.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CGS's Safety Manual and the applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications:


  • Successful completion of Secondary School (Grade XII) Education.
  • 3M Scott Air-Pak SCBA Certified Technician II or equivalent
  • Minimum of two (2) years related experience including truck and equipment operation and maintenance, and inventory control and purchasing.
  • Relevant experience in operation of the fire ground training simulators considered a major asset.
  • Previous firefighting experience or knowledge considered as an asset.
  • Knowledge of the legislation that affect the fire service including the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Fire Prevention and Protection Act.
  • Demonstrate ability to repair and maintain basic firefighting equipment, standardized vehicle and equipment maintenance and repairs utilizing safe operation of hand tools.
  • Ability to use tools and equipment required to perform the work.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to demonstrate interpersonal skills in dealing with staff, clients, and suppliers in a courteous, professional, and effective manner.
  • Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.
  • French verbal and written skills an asset.
  • Satisfactory health, attendance, and former employment history.
  • Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely and possess a valid "DZ" driver's licence.
