Job Summary

The Food Program Coordinator is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Free Food program at Free Play for Kids.

This individual leads the creation of food education programming, development of kid friendly recipes, building of relationships with food vendors and suppliers and pickup and packaging of weekly food packs / snacks for program participants.


Education & Qualifications:


  • Student or graduate of a recognized postsecondary education with degree or diploma in Nutrition & Food Science, Dietetics, Culinary Arts, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Programming experience such as logistics and transportation coordination or inventory procurement is considered an asset.
  • Proficiency with GSuite and Zoom software.
  • Experience working with socially vulnerable youth or social work experience, such as schools, afterschool programs, day homes or summer camps is considered an asset.
  • Representative of the community that Free Play serves.
  • Standard First Aid Certification and CPR training.
  • Valid driver's licence with no at fault accidents.
  • Clear Criminal and Vulnerable Sector check.

Responsibilities:


  • Managing the execution, growth and development of the overall vision for Free Play's and Play to
Lead food program with the overall goal of increasing the number of families served per week.

  • Developing weekly simple recipes for kids and youth ages and ages and delivering regular programming in basic meal prep instruction, nutrition, etc for both age groups.
  • Leading weekly food & nutrition education sessions with site managers from the Free To Play
Program as well as daily food sessions with the youths in the Play to Lead Program.

  • Coordinating the storage, sorting, packing and transportation of food packages for program participants.
  • Managing partnerships with other organizations involved in supporting the Food Program including identifying and building new relationships with reliable suppliers, as well as enhancing existing relationships by coordinating regular food orders and pickup schedules.
  • Communicating with program participants and families to determine food requirements, delivery timing, allergies or dietary restrictions and other important ongoing needs.
  • Creating simple and accessible recipes for youth and kids including illustrations and animations and working towards creating a Free Play cookbook and recipe video library.
  • Developing additional resources to support youth and families as they evolve and progress through the Food Program, such as guidance for program participants to create their own recipes.
  • Tracking costs and quantity of orders to ensure that recipes and supplies fall within the overall
Food Program budget.

  • Improving the logistics and operations of the food program including quality control, scheduling, transportation and inventory management.
  • Adapt and respond to the needs of the community by scaling the Food Program according to the number of participants.
  • As an ambassador of Free Play, model key organization values through interactions with all internal and external partners and team members.
  • This position will evolve over time, based on initiatives and objectives identified in Free Play's strategic plan and vision.
  • In addition to normal duties, from time to time there may be work assignments arising from special events, special projects, or overall program initiatives.
  • Plan and develop food program for the fall and winter of 2023/202
  • Plan and develop food sessions/ programs for Free Play's summer camps, spring break camps and any other additional programs during holidays and or breaks.

Position Conditions:


  • This is a full time position scheduled 8 hours per day from 10:00 6:00 PM Monday to Friday, however daily work schedule may vary depending on programming schedule
  • Flexibility to work afternoons and evenings is preferred
