    Arcadis is seeking an Intermediate Ecologist with a background is fish species identification to join the Waterloo Natural Systems team.     This Intermediate Ecologist position will be largely focused on clients and projects in southern Ontario but will also include opportunities to work on projects across Canada as needs arise. As an ecologist you will be responsible for: assisting with the coordination of projects undertaken within southern Ontario, supporting the delivery of projects and proposals, scoping and executing field programs, leading technical reporting, and collaborating with other members of the team to provide high-quality solutions to our clients.
    Through this role, you will be a key member of a team that has a history of undertaking several of the most interesting and influential projects in our communities. Some of the ongoing projects you will be involved with will include: Turtle Radio Telemetry and eDNA studies, the design and development of our growing communities, the development of mitigation measures to protect wildlife from road impacts, and many others.

    Role accountabilities:

    • Follow and promote a strong health and safety culture within the team
    • Commit to self-development and ongoing learning in the field of Ecology, Leadership, and/or Business, as they aligned with your own personal career goals
    • Help coordinate projects and technical studies for the Natural Systems team in southern Ontario
    • Assist with the scoping, planning, and execution of biophysical surveys as required, following the standard field methodologies used in Ontario. For example, aquatic habitat surveys, fish and herpetofauna salvage, headwater drainage feature assessments, wetland evaluations and delineation, targeted SAR surveys, breeding bird surveys, Pileated Woodpecker nest cavity search, etc
    • Support the management of the digital data collection and associated project GIS data
    • On an as-needed basis, act as the Natural Systems Team representative at client meetings, and our client's representative at agency and stakeholder meetings
    • Prepare and/or contribute to technical reports that meet the needs clients and partners. Examples include: Environmental Impact Studies, Existing Conditions Reports, Fisheries and Oceans Canada Request for Reviews, Environmental Assessments, Due Diligence Reports, and other reports required by the environmental permit and approval processes
    • Help coordinate permitting and approvals at the local, provincial, and federal level as they relate to natural heritage; (e.g., tree removal/harm permits, and permits under the Endangered Species Act, Conservation Authorities Act, Fisheries Act, etc.)
    • Prepare and/or contribute to the preparation of project proposals
    Qualifications

    Qualifications and Experience:

    • A university degree in biology, ecology, environmental studies, or related discipline

    • Minimum 3 years of related work experience

    • A thorough understanding of municipal, provincial, and federal policies and legislation that govern the management of natural heritage features in Southern Ontario

    • Willingness to work flexible hours and undertake fieldwork under a variety of conditions

    • Willingness to travel for fieldwork and out-of-town meetings

    • Willingness to work in an Arcadis office (typically the Waterloo location) on an as-needed basis

    • Excellent interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communication skills

    • Strong writing, organizational, and time management skills

    • Proficiency in key MS Office Suite software (i.e., Word, Outlook, Excel)

    • Must have or be able to obtain first aid certification

    • A post-graduate degree or diploma in biology, ecology, environmental studies, or related discipline

    • Experience in environment consulting

    • Ontario-based certifications (e.g., ISA Arborist, Class II Electrofishing, Ontario Wetland Evaluation System, etc.)

    • Training in standardized field methodologies and species identification by sight, sound, and sign (e.g., headwater drainage feature assessment, fish species identification, breeding birds, mammal tracks and scat, etc.)

    • Experience in the application of natural heritage surveys to support municipal, provincial, or federal approvals in the land development, transportation infrastructure, and municipal planning sectors. These include, but may not be limited to: breeding birds, amphibian call surveys, ecological land classification and vegetation surveys, tree inventories, etc

    • Project management experience

    • Experience with ArcGIS and Mobile Data Collection tools

    • Proficiency in software beyond the MS Office Suite programs listed above (e.g., AutoCAD, database software, etc.)
