About the Job:


Are you interested in pursuing a rewarding environmental career in the industrial sector? Gerdau is seeking an
Environmental Specialist to support the operations of the Whitby Mill Steel where recycled scrap metal is shredded, melted, and rolled into new long-steel products.


Reporting to the Environmental Manager for Ontario, the Environmental Specialist is responsible for the routine environmental activities for the Whitby Mill to meet compliance obligations and support the environmental management system certified to ISO 14001.


The Environmental Specialist will oversee environmental controls and monitoring/measurement of operational processes to promote environmental performance and assist with the company's Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) sustainability journey.


Key Areas of Responsibility:


  • Coordinate routines associated with waste management (truck and rail shipments), wastewater discharge, air emissions monitoring, spills, and radiation alarm response
  • Oversee environmental sampling programs and complete associated reporting in accordance with Environmental Compliance Approvals (ECA's)
  • Compile environmental metrics to support regulatory reporting (i.e., National Pollutant Release Inventory, Greenhouse Gas Emissions, StatsCan) and corporate reporting
  • Manage external service providers to support the environmental activities of the business, including purchase orders, task coordination, and supplier performance
  • Ensure procedures are in place to maintain a robust environmental management system
  • Develop and deliver environmental/regulatory training programs for operations including TDG, Emergency Response Assistance Plan, Radiation Awareness, etc.
  • Routinely engage with plant personnel to promote awareness, verify regulatory compliance, and seek opportunities to minimize risk and improve environmental performance
  • Provide timely guidance and assistance to operations with a 'boots on the ground' approach
  • Participate in regulatory inspections and internal/external environmental audits
  • Occasional travel may be required to participate in audits and collaborate with Gerdau Mills within North America

You Have:


  • Bachelor's degree or technical diploma in Engineering (Environmental, Chemical or Civil), Earth Sciences or related discipline
  • Minimum 3 years of related environmental experience in a manufacturing setting or technical capacity (consulting, field work, Government)
  • High level of enthusiasm, persistence, initiative, and experienced judgment to balance priorities and complete tasks in timely fashion
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with internal/external stakeholders and developing written procedures
  • Strong problemsolving ability and resourcefulness, particularly in dealing with environmental monitoring instrumentation (dataloggers, flow meters, air samplers, radiation detection devices, etc.)
  • Exceptional level of organization and attention to detail for management of projects, data, and reporting
  • Ability to perform inspections and audits with a focus on continual improvement
  • Strong level of collaboration with crossfunctional teams to overcome challenges
  • Proficiency with Windows and Microsoft office programs
  • Previous experience with the ISO 14001 environmental management standard is preferred.
  • Experience with nuclear gauges and licensing through the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) is an asset
