About the role


As a Legal Counsel, and under the direction of the Director, Legal Services you assists with the preparation and provision of legal advice to the Corporation on matters relating to: the interpretation of the CDIC Act and its by-laws (including legislative and regulatory policy and drafting) as well as any other laws, government policies or directives affecting CDIC and its Board; internal corporate operations; the resolution of financial institutions and the insurance and risk assessment functions of the Corporation; the legal content of all corporate communications; compliance management; ATIP and privacy; digitalization/innovation within the financial sector; and other matters as may be required.

She/he assists with the provision of advice to all divisions of the Corporation and to senior levels of the Corporation; requests the assistance of outside Counsel retained by the Corporation in her/his areas of responsibility; and responds to requests for legal information from third parties.

This role can be performed from our Ottawa or Toronto offices, following a hybrid model approach. This is a full-time permanent opportunity. #LI-Hybrid

  • Provides legal analysis on issues of varying complexity affecting the Corporation. This may include independent research and the provision of memoranda and correspondence and coordinating assistance from other Counsel (which may in some instances, include outside Counsel).
  • Supports the Director, Legal Services and Senior Legal Counsel with research, memoranda, projects and matters as needed.
  • Assists with the compliance function of the Legal Department, including providing research and updates for the compliance management process framework.
  • Provides guidance to the Corporation's Communications and Public Affairs staff on various information and compliance issues.
  • Contributes to the administration of the Legal Department.

  • The incumbent must be a member in good standing of a provincial law society or bar, with at least one year of experience (in private practice, as inhouse Counsel or in a legal role with a government entity) working in commercial law, corporate law, and/or corporate governance, including knowledge of banking law and/or insolvency (as an asset).
  • Strong research, writing and problemsolving skills;
  • Strong attention to detail and good judgment;
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills;
  • Ability to work in stressful situations within tight timeframes;
  • Ability to work autonomously;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team;
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in English;
  • Oral and written communication skills in French are an asset;
  • Excellent time management skills;
  • Excellent critical thinking skills.

Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Secret level security clearance
