Position Purpose


The purpose of this position (Home Support Worker) is to support and enhance the dignity and independence of the elderly community members and individuals with Healthcare needs and challenges.

The Home Support Worker will assist them to remain in the community with family and friends, by assisting with activities of daily living and household tasks.

The Home Support Worker will provide regular non-medical support to vulnerable elderly clients within the Home Care Program.


The bi-weekly supports delivered will be directed by and overseen by the Splatsin Home Care Nurse and will include light housekeeping duties, wash dishes, wash floors, clean bathrooms, occasional transportation to appointments, with a focus on a clean, safe and tidy home setting for the community member.


We do not replace the care and support offered by family members, relatives and friends who will support the individual to live independently in the community.


The Home Support Worker will maintain community member confidentiality, privacy and security of the client's health information and health status in accordance with Splatsin Confidentiality oath and provincial and federal practice standards.


Key Result Areas and Tasks

  • Perform and/or assist clients to the level required with household tasks including cleaning, doing laundry, changing bed linens, preparing simple meals, as per their assessed needs
  • Document information and prepare reports and client files appropriately
  • Clean and sterilize tools and equipment related to Home Support cleaning equipment
  • Identify and report client concerns to Home Care Health Team Lead
  • Respect and adhere to the limited scope of the role for each community member
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by their Home Care Health Team Lead
  • Reports to the Home Care Health Team Lead & the Health Director
  • Works with community members to build a respectful relationship as a care provider
  • Interacts respectfully with other Splatsin employee and community members during the course of their day
  • Participate in team meetings, training and review of their work duties and assigned tasks

Tools & Equipment

  • House cleaning equipment and supplies including buckets, mops, brooms, vacuums, etc.
  • Updates each visit any needed minor repairs checklist for discussion with the Home Care Team
  • Valid driver's license and vehicle to move from home visit to home visit
  • Reporting of their duties to their Team Lead and potential for daily charting and notes
  • Cell phone
  • Vehicle for transportation

Work Environment

  • Work is completed primarily in client's houses.
  • Risk of exposure to biohazards via the cleaning processes.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands


The Home Support Worker will spend time performing repetitive movements, lifting medical equipment in and out of a vehicle, and providing house cleaning duties.

Effective body mechanics will be required to reduce and prevent the risk of injury and strains.


Environmental Conditions


The Home Support Worker will spend much of the time working independently and alone in the field with clients, driving from location to location in a rural area in various weather and road conditions.

The Home Support Worker may be exposed to colds, flus, bodily fluids which could result in the transmission of illness.

The use of Universal Precautions will be required to minimize risks.


Sensory Demands
Sensory demands include computer, which may cause eyestrain and/or headaches.

Home Support Workers may be exposed to bodily fluids through vision and smell; this may cause the worker to experience nausea temporarily.


Mental Demands
The Home Support Worker will be exposed to medical terminology, references and health conditions that may impact stress levels.


Position Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent education and work experience
  • Home Support Worker Certificate or Diploma
  • Must be able to bend frequently, climb stairs, and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Physically able to perform the diverse duties of the position to meet community members needs
  • Food Safe Certificate
  • WHMIS training
  • Ability and willingness to work five days a week both physically and emotionally
  • At least 6 12 months of previous home support experience or equivalent combination of education and experience combined with a willingness to learn the role
  • Experience working with First Nations peoples in a community setting
  • Proven ability to work independently and to follow Homecare Nurse directions
  • Discretion & respect for confidentiality
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to build rapport, empathize, and relate to others, particularly the elderly and individuals with special needs
  • Detail oriented with Proven housekeeping skills
  • Ability to observe and recognize changes in clients and their environments
  • Effective communication skills
  • Able to appropriately operate cleaning equipment and tools for the activities
