Atlohsa Family Healing Services is seeking a motivated and dynamic individual to fill the role of Research Assistant for a study on Indigenous approaches to alleviating chronic homelessness.

The primary role of the Research Assistant is to provide research and administrative support to a project team as part of an action research study on alleviating Indigenous homelessness in London, Ontario.

Role and Responsibility


Working as part of the Giwetashkad Indigenous Homelessness team and using a wholistic Indigenous-led approach to principles of harm reduction and trauma-informed care, the Research Assistant will liaise with the research team, supporting all aspects of project development and management.

The Research Assistant will support Indigenous culture-based community engagement with Indigenous people experiencing homelessness as well as service providers in the housing and homelessness field.

The Research Assistant work to collect and steward Indigenous data according to best practices for research with Indigenous people, with the goal of creating an evidence base for an Indigenous-led Coordinated Access approach.

The Research Assistant is prepared to work with a diverse range of community stakeholders and to advocate for the Strategic Directions of the Giwetashkad Indigenous Homelessness Plan and support the development of robust, actionable and measurable policy recommendations for improving housing and homelessness services for Indigenous people in southwestern Ontario.

The Research Assistant must have excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Suitability

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the languages, traditional ways, history and cultures of the Indigenous population in the London region
  • Strong analysis of colonialism and the ways in which historical and ongoing colonization impacts Indigenous peoples intergenerationally
  • Experience working with Indigenous people experiencing homelessness
  • Demonstrated strengths in interpersonal relations, problemsolving, crisis intervention, group dynamics, community development and other innovative approaches
  • While a formal education such as a university or college degree is an asset, applicants with equivalent work, community or lived experience are encouraged to apply
  • Understanding of cultural safety and an awareness of its impact on practice
  • Ability to work in outdoor locations and do minor physical labour such as gathering poles and building lodge
  • Skills in conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiation (to build trust and resolve disagreements)
  • Excellent organizational and coordination skills and the ability to prioritize multiple competing workload demands in fast paced environment
  • Effective communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with others in a respectful manner as defined in the Atlohsa Code of Conduct
  • Valid Ontario Driver's License, First Aid and CPR certificate and Current Vulnerable Sector Check

EMPLOYMENT TERM:
Full-Time contract to March

REMUNERATION:
$23 - $26 dependent on experience, and benefits package based on qualifications
