Responsibilities:


OVERALL PURPOSE:
The Vehicle Technician is responsible for operation, maintenance and repair of rail-bound SkyTrain vehicles' mechanical, electrical and electronic systems.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Works independently or under the direction of the Vehicle Supervisor or leadhand to accomplish scheduled or unscheduled maintenance of SkyTrain vehicles, and shop equipment.

Performs in-depth troubleshooting and repair of mechanical, electrical or electronic problems for SkyTrain vehicles. Signs off work as repaired to standard.


Interprets maintenance manuals, blueprints, schematic and drawings, and prepares sketches or schematics to communicate with others in performance of work.

Makes recommendations for hardware and procedural changes that become evident during performance of the BCRTC maintenance effort.

Performs tests and provides reports as required.

Accounts for all time and materials used in performance of the maintenance effort.

Operates SkyTrain vehicles and support vehicles including, but not limited to, forklifts and pusher units.

Repairs and operates shop equipment and machining tools.

Operates motor vehicle (4 wheel-drive/standard transmission) with valid BC driver's license.


Provides instruction and direction to junior staff, apprentices and/or servicepersons as required and assumes responsibility for work carried out under this direction.

Performs vehicle centre first-line troubleshooting, train coordination and maintenance dispatch duties under the direction of the Vehicle Supervisor.

Configures and hostles trains and ensures that trains entering passenger service are serviceable.

Completes assigned tasks to Company or industry standards using approved work practices and procedures.

Attends technical and safety training programs to continually upgrade skills.

Handles emergencies and failures in accordance with established procedures through immediate response and quick action.


Performs related duties as assigned, such being items of a minor nature which do not affect the value of the job.


SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
As per WorkSafeBC regulations, this job requires an annual fit test and may necessitate the use of a respirator. In either case, the employee must be clean shaven. Any exemption requests should be raised to Occupational Health and/or Labour Relations for consideration.


Qualifications:


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Grade 12 or equivalent;
Red Seal Certification in one of the following trades; Heavy Duty Mechanic, Automotive Mechanic, Commercial Transport Mechanic, Industrial Electrician.

The following trades; AME-M, AME-E, Electrical Technologist, Mechanical Technologist, Electronics Technologist or Electronics Technician may also be considered.


Minimum of five (5) years' experience having been certified in one of the above Trades over the last 6 years.

Completion or ability to satisfactorily complete all levels of the SkyTrain vehicle specific maintenance courses.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a maintenance team.

Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License.

Recruitment Process:

An applicant will be required to demonstrate their suitability for this position by meeting the minimum level of qualifications and experience in order to be invited into the selection process.

A standard interview format will be used including general, scenario and behavioural descriptive interview questions.


Work Schedule:

40 hours per week.

This is a full-time temporary position with an expected end date of November 16, 2024.

Wage:
$57.95 per hour
