Position Description


Reporting to the Social Emergency Manager, the Social Emergency Support Worker will assist in emergency management activities through all five pillars of emergency management: prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.

The Social Emergency Support Worker will work directly with community emergency management teams to help prevent or reduce the impacts of disasters on KCA member communities.


During crises, this support will provide in-person assistance to frontline staff in areas such as food security, transportation, procurement, documentation and recordkeeping, communications, accommodation and bookings, as well as any other areas which will support relief efforts, in tandem with other supports as requested by community emergency management teams.


In between response activities, the Social Emergency Support Worker will act as a liaison between the KCA Emergency Management Team, our organizational partners, and our communities to support the success of community-driven preparations, responses, and recovery.

The focus will be to build community capacity by helping to develop and maintain emergency preparedness plans with involvement of community leadership and Elders so that responses are culturally safe, respectful, and appropriate for each individual community.

Building partnerships with collaborators to support mitigation and enhancement measures will be critical for attaining the best possible outcomes during an emergency

Summary of Duties

  • Support the Social Emergency Manager in emergency planning and response activities
  • Act as a liaison between community leadership, regional emergency partners, and the Social Emergency Manager. Develop and maintain active working relationships with relevant local, provincial, and federal partners
  • Assist with organization of evacuations including but not limited to, client registrations, maintaining client profiles (medical, identification, and transportation needs), evacuation site setup, transportation arrangements, repatriation support, etc
  • Maintain documentation according to the JEMS evacuation standards
  • Link clients with services while taking care to respect confidentiality and privacy laws
  • Directly assist clientele with transportation to appointments, delivery of medications, food security, and other emergency needs
  • Arrange support for detox, medical appointments, and internal/external referrals for medical, mental health, and cultural needs
  • Be an active support to Chief and Council in Emergency Response teams, recovery coordination and team support with an emphasis on landbased and cultural strengths and resiliency building. Support each community in their response and recovery by participating in community emergency response meetings and identifying areas where additional supports, expertise, partners, and collaborators can support mitigation and enhancement measures for best possible outcomes

Qualifications

  • Training in Mental Health First Aid, Mental Health Assist, and other MHA training
  • Training will be available but any of the following training is an asset
  • Office of the Fire Marshall and Emergency Management Incident Management System (IMS) 100, 200
  • Office of the Fire Marshall and Emergency Management Basic Emergency Management (EM) 200
  • Incident Management System Emergency Operations Center's (IMS 250)
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting
  • Excellent skills in the following areas: computer, organization, networking, interpersonal, presentation and communication (written & oral)
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams
