The Ministry of Indigenous Relations works with Indigenous communities, the federal government, industry and other stakeholders to support strong, vibrant Indigenous communities and people who fully participate in a prosperous, competitive and diverse Alberta.


The ministry is also responsible for:

  • Promoting social and economic opportunities for Indigenous Peoples
  • Coleading Indigenous training for all Alberta public servants
  • Working with other ministries to develop opportunities for Indigenous Peoples to influence land and resource management decisions.


The Strategic Engagement and Policy Innovation (SEPI) branch is part of the Consultation, Land and Policy (CLP) division in Indigenous Relations.

SEPI provides a strong foundation of policy development, strategic engagement, consultation capacity development, expert advice and relationship-building through education, training, and capacity funding.

SEPI staff work with staff throughout the Ministry and the rest of the Government of Alberta to ensure that Indigenous-related policies are informed by Indigenous input and that engagement and consultation best practices are used, to meet the Ministry's mandate to advance reconciliation.


Role:


The Strategic Engagement and Policy Innovation (SEPI) branch is seeking meticulous, collaborative and team-oriented individuals who have knowledge and experience of Métis communities and peoples in Alberta.


Advisor, Métis Credible Assertion (PS4)
The Métis Credible Assertion Advisor role focuses on the review of Métis aboriginal rights assertions.

The incumbent will lead the review and analysis of assertions, which contain a large volume of complex materials, including but not limited to historical documents, expert reports, genealogies, traditional land use data and organizational records.

The Advisor will meet with Métis organizations to explain the Métis credible assertion process, answer questions and provide constructive feedback.

The incumbent will lead a portfolio of assertions.


Analyst, Métis Credible Assertion (PS3)
The Métis Credible Assertion Analyst role focuses on the review of Métis aboriginal rights assertions.

The incumbent will support the review and analysis of assertions containing a large volume of complex materials, including but not limited to historical documents, genealogies, expert reports, traditional land use data and organizational records.

The Analyst will also participate in meetings with Métis organizations to explain the Métis credible assertion process.


Qualifications:


Advisor, Métis Credible Assertion (PS4)


A University degree in a related field (Indigenous Studies, Public Policy, History, Political Science, Geography, Anthropology, etc.) supplemented by a minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible related experience is required.


Equivalency:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Required experience includes:

  • Strong research and analysis skills.
  • Critical thinking and solutionfocused problemsolving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Indigenous peoples, governance, culture, history, community dynamics and protocols.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of historical and current legislation related to Indigenous peoples and the impacts of this on First Nations and Métis peoples in Alberta and Canada.
  • Established working relationships and/or networks with Indigenous communities and individuals that may include specialized training or lived experience.
  • Strong political acumen.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Alberta's Credible Assertion Process and Indigenous Consultation policies and guidelines.
