  • Reporting to the Sergeant i/c Prisoner Care Facility, the Booking Technician(s) are responsible for ensuring the safe and secure custody of all prisoners, processing Criminal Code offenses, and preparing release and remand documents, while at all times respecting the confidential nature of the position.
  • It is expected that the incumbent has a genuine appreciation for and understanding of protocol, discretion and professionalism, is able to accept and assume responsibility, and has the ability to interpret and make decisions in accordance with prescribed procedures and practices of Halifax Regional Police. This position is currently located at David P. McKinnon Police Headquarters, 1975 Gottingen Street, Halifax.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Process and supervise all prisoners. This includes proper health assessment previous to entry to cells, monitoring a thorough search and constant health monitoring through mandatory 15minute checks. Court preparation is secondary to these care functions.
  • Responsible for quality of fingerprints and photographs
  • Perform fingerprint and photographs using automated or manual process, as required
  • Responsible for Prisoner Care Facility
  • Responsible for the general administration of the Prisoner Care Facility
  • Maintain a log of checks on prisoners
  • Perform bail hearings
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment
  • Responsible for safe keeping and return of property for individuals in custody
  • Provides or obtains medical attention for prisoners when needed and appropriate
  • Reports all significant incidents to the NCO in charge of Prisoner Care Facility
  • Liaise with NCO in charge Prisoner Care Facility daily and when workload or staffing interferes with prisoner care
  • Processes all prisoners charged under the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Prepares all documents (release and court documents as well as documents for remand)

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Complete a daily report of events during shift
  • Monitor equipment and supplies within the lockup area

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:


  • Grade 1
  • Graduate of a Correctional Officer Training Program; or
  • Previous training as a police officer or military police officer with 3 years relevant experience; or
  • Previous education in corrections or security training and 3 years relevant experience
  • Must have a current certificate in Standard First aid and CPR

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of the Criminal Code, Provincial and Federal Statutes as well as Municipal Statutes
  • Ability to write factual appraisals and reports in an automated computer format
  • Understanding of bail hearings and remand processes pertaining to a lockup facility
  • A mature, professional approach to responsibility
  • Strong understanding of risk management
  • Experience working within strict deadlines and guidelines in a complex and changing highpressure work environment
  • Must be able to keep accurate and welldocumented records
  • Crisis management skills
  • Effective interpersonal communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to set priorities, tact and independent judgement
  • Knowledge of selfdefense techniques, an asset

WORK STATUS:Permanent Part-time

HOURS OF WORK: Shift work, with a minimum of 4 hours per shift and a minimum of 20 hours per week. Any hours over 40 hours per week will be paid at an overtime rate of time and a half.

SALARY: $28.61 per hour per the Halifax Regional Police Association Collective Agreement
