Scope of the role


The Surface and Maintenance General Foreman supervises and coordinates all surface and maintenance activities in the setting up, installing, repairing, and maintaining machinery and equipment.

The Surface and Maintenance General Foreman is responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the surface and maintenance departments and supporting the operations department.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directs supervisors in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic maintenance in the repair of mining machinery and equipment;
  • Assists and directs supervisors in diagnosing malfunctions, dismantling, assembling and installing mining machinery and equipment;
  • Reviews maintenance reports to resolve problems, ensuring minimum costs and preventing operational delays;
  • Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance and product quality;
  • Develops or revises standard operational and working practices;
  • Observes supervisors and workers to ensure compliance with standards;
  • Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules;
  • Interprets and communicates company policies to supervisors and workers;
  • Suggests changes in working conditions or use of equipment to increase efficiency of shop, department, or work crew;
  • Initiates or suggests plans to motivate supervisors to achieve work goals;
  • Confers with other department heads to coordinate activities within the Maintenance Department;
  • Takes responsibility for aspects of occupational health and safety, and environmental matters, over which the individual has control, including adherence to all requirements applicable to KGHM International;
  • Oversee the coordination of surface ore movement and processing with Geology department to ensure monthly targets are achieved;
  • Oversee the coordination for all surface contractors;
  • Oversee all surface activities to ensure production schedules are met;
  • Such other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Surface and Maintenance General Foreman is required to travel underground as well as the surface yards and infrastructure on a regular basis with contractors, surface and maintenance personnel.

Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge

  • Previous Related Work Experience Required
  • 10years mining experience or equivalent of education and experience
  • Past experience leading others
  • Education Required
  • Mechanical Engineering Degree or equivalent
  • Licensed Trades Person (Mechanical, Electrical or Fixed Plant)
  • Supervisory Common core
  • Special Skills and/or Knowledge Required
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to coach, mentor and lead the maintenance team
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of the organization and government agencies
  • Strong Health and Safety background
  • Strong background in cost control, cost tracking and mining methods
  • Special Equipment/Computer Knowledge Required
  • Good computer skills, i.e. Microsoft Office
  • Experience with a computerized maintenance program, i.e. JDE
  • Knowledge of payroll programs for time entry
