    $95, $116,554.00The Human Rights Office (HRO provides leadership and expert advice regarding the creation, implementation and evaluation of policies, procedures and practices on inclusion, employment equity, accessibility, prevention of harassment and discrimination, sexual violence, and on the rights and responsible conduct of students.

    The Human Rights Office (HRO) is a neutral and impartial office responsible for receiving and responding to complaints related to human rights from all university community members. The HRO also provides education and training, and offers guidance and consultation to all community members on these matters.

    Position Purpose :

    Reporting to the Senior Director, Human Rights Office (HRO), the Lead Advisor, Human Rights Office provides leadership and expertise for all functions of the Policy on Non-Academic Student Rights and Responsibilities while ensuring that the student's rights are protected and that the University of Ottawa's standards of behaviour are adhered to.

    In this role you will:

  • Administers the Policy on Non-Academic Student Rights and Responsibilities and advises the community regarding the standards outlined in the Policies and the procedures for administering the Policies.
  • Acts as an impartial dispute resolution practitioner for concerns and complaints related to student conduct.
  • Provides a supportive and unbiased environment through active listening to understand the nature of the incidents in order to preserve the rights and dignity of all parties.
  • What you will bring:

  • University degree in public administration or other relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Minimum of 5 years experience of direct and intensive of experience with at least 3 years of experience in conflict management dealing with multiple complex student issues and student conduct issues.
  • At least three years of directly related professional student affairs experience is required and must include knowledge of student development theory and student conduct processes, and applicable laws
  • Legal training/experience/knowledge on complaint procedures and principles natural justice and procedural fairness
  • Certificate or commensurate experience in mediation/alternate dispute resolution methods
  • Working knowledge of legal issues and political dimensions related to student conduct
  • Experience in conducting investigations
  • Experience in case management and coordinating services based on the needs of the individual.
  • Evidence of an effective leadership style, experience in residence life and in student conduct, and a background demonstrating success in dealing with students, parents, administrators, and faculty is required
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of programs, including training and campaigns on student conduct
  • Dispute resolution skills, including active listening, counselling, mediation, and crisis intervention
  • Sound understanding of confidential processes, investigation procedures and the application of the duty of fairness in complaint procedures
  • Sound analytical and evaluative skills and independent judgment
  • Excellent organizational, management, and leadership skills are required
  • Analytical skills to analyze and synthesize policy, interpret legislation and complex reports, and develop recommendations for a wide range of university initiatives
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and in French is essential
  • Interpersonal skills with a keen ability to engage with various stakeholders and members of the University community, and build rapport with staff, student, and faculty groups
  • Sensitivity to and awareness of other cultures, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required
  • Sensitivity to and awareness of Indigenous, Racism and disability-related issues and their intersection(s) with other identities including race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, marital status, family status, etc
  • Ability to build, foster and maintain effective working relationships with and work collaboratively with students, faculty staff and off-campus partners
  • Demonstrated ability in writing reports, and web or print content
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software applications, social media tools, as well as well-developed research capabilities
