Description

Working as the main support to the Chef, the Cook will assist the Chef in the production of meals for HHF residents including cooking and other required food preparation activities.

In the absence of the Chef, the Cook will lead all meal preparation activities of the kitchen staff ensuring meal plans and food standards are maintained.

Based on the highest hygiene standards, the Cook will ensure all kitchen and food preparation areas are properly cleaned and sanitized before, during and after meal preparation activities.


Food Preparation and Presentation

  • Prepare ingredients and meals including washing, peeling and/or cutting, cooking, assisting with serving, preparing plates, monitoring steam tables and replenishing food levels under the direction of the Chef,
  • In the absence of the Chef, lead and direct meal preparation and delivery in accordance to the Chef's meal and recipe plan
  • Work with the Chef and Baker to help develop creative meals plans based on the Canada Food Guide and following the dieticians food menu review recommendations

Kitchen Management/Administration

  • Monitor inventory of food and supplies and inform the Chef of products to be ordered, following first in first out (FIFO) rules
  • Receive deliveries of supplies, check for quality and assist in storage activities
  • Be an active member of the Kitchen Staff by communicating daily with the Chef, and/or Assistant Manager regarding daytoday food service operations, food preparation, efficiencies, faulty equipment, requirement of tools and supplies needed within the kitchen and dining room areas

Equipment Maintenance

  • Maintain and troubleshoot issues with kitchen tools and equipment finding appropriate solutions such as small repairs, contacting the maintenance department and/or escalating the issue to the supplier
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance and/or ensure servicing of equipment is completed regularly and/or in accordance with manufacture guidelines

Health, Safety and Environmental Stewardship

  • Participate and contribute to the success of the overall safety program
  • Support and abide by all safety management systems and promote a safety culture throughout the organization
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary and tidy work area at all times
  • Respond to emergency situations as they arise providing appropriate followup and documentation as required
  • Adhere to all manufacturer guidelines and safe work practices when using equipment
  • Use Personal Protective Equipment and follow universal precautions
  • Participate in worksite inspections, health & safety meetings and committees as required
  • Contribute to the organization's commitment to improving its impact on the environment through daytoday operations and seeking innovative ways to be a greener organization
Undertake the performance of other assigned duties, including those specified on Job Task Lists, as required


Requirements:


  • High School Diploma is preferred and a qualified Cook Certification is an asset
  • Three (3) years of previous cooking and/or baking experience in a hospitality or commercial kitchen, bakery, etc. is required
  • Completion of a current and acceptable criminal records check for the vulnerable sector as required by the Protection for Persons in Care Act and the Accommodation Standards and Licensing Act is mandatory
  • Attainment of a Food Safety Certificate is required
  • Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and internet usage is required
  • First Aid and CPR certification is required or must be attained soon after hire

Hours

  • 6:30am3:00pm and 9:00am5:30pm
  • 4 days on 4 days off rotation
  • Approximately 56 hours biweekly
