Responsibilities:


The Project Coordinator role is part of the Project Coordinator/Manager non-union job class, working in the FIMS Film Festival Critics Lab for a 7-week period.


The FIMS Film Festival Critics Lab will introduce 20 undergraduate and graduate students to the professional practice film writing/criticism by providing access to see up to eight films at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Though the Festival runs September 7th to 17th in Toronto, the Critics Lab will consist of up to 2 film screenings per day between Wednesday, September 13th and Saturday, September 16th.

Lab participants will be provided with daily return bus travel and a bagged lunch during the Lab period.


Under the supervision of the Principal Coordinator (Professor Nataleah Hunter-Young), the
Project Coordinator (graduate student) will play an integral role in organizing and preparing the activities of the FIMS Film Festival Critics Lab, including selecting films for Lab screenings, organizing and coordinating the Lab schedule, preparing participant information packages, collating and disseminating daily film reviews from independent critics and trade publications (Variety, Screen International, THR, etc).

The Project Coordinator will attend festival screenings with participants between Wednesday, September 13 and Saturday, September 16 (where it does not interfere with the Project Coordinator's course schedule) and will be available to respond to participant inquiries during the Lab period, as they arise.

Working collaboratively with the Principal Coordinators and the Creative Assistant, the incumbent will collect written reviews from Lab participants, edit and extract quotes for dissemination on the FIMS instagram account and Following the end of the Lab, the Project Coordinator will help support the debrief of the Critics Lab at the group workshop and lunch in early October.


The Project Coordinator will be responsible for supporting and overseeing all aspects of one or more projects within the FIMS Film Festival Critics Lab.

The incumbent will coordinate and provide ongoing leadership of the project, and manage all project phases by setting deadlines, assigning responsibilities, and monitoring and summarizing progress and results.

The incumbent will engage various stakeholders, ensure project support and sponsorship, and provide leadership and direction to the project team.


  • Please note that graduate students cannot work more than 10 hours/week (maximum hours allowed) in all combined roles on campus

  • Demonstrated interest in film festivals and its ecosystems (has attended or participated in a festival before)

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:

  • Strong knowledge of the global film industry; proven interest in contemporary international cinema will be considered an asset
  • Experience organizing, coordinating and leading group activities; familiarity with best practices in building a strong collaborative team and leading people
  • Familiarity with techniques for planning, managing and coordinating multiple projects, with competing priorities that involve a variety of stakeholders
  • Project management skills to ensure team roles are clear, milestones are communicated and deadlines are met
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to clearly and effectively interact with all levels of the organization
  • Proven interest in creative writing for public audiences; experience writing about film will be considered an asset
  • Proven ability to multitask and prioritize with an eye toward consistently producing highquality work and meeting deadlines
  • Ability to work well independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to interact professionally with students, staff, faculty, and other members of the University community
