The Opportunity


The Infrastructure Department is comprised of five Branches, including three Design and Construction Branches, the Wastewater Operations Branch, and the Water Operations Branch.

Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City's environmental infrastructure and systems including water supply, treatment, and distribution; wastewater collection and treatment; and the design and construction of the City's infrastructure including treatment plants, pump stations, roads, sewers, watermains, sidewalks, stormwater management ponds, water towers and reservoirs, etc.


The Utilities Instrument Technician position monitors, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, tests, and calibrates process control instrumentation and electrical equipment to ensure the Water Operations SCADA system has a reliable and stable control platform.

This position provides technical and/or functional advice, guidance, and instruction to Water Operations Branch staff regarding process control instrumentation, electrical equipment and SCADA systems.

Through participation in process control instrumentation and electrical equipment management, this position provides input and recommendations to the Supervisor of Ground Water Supply and/or the Supervisor of Surface Water Supply, regarding the implementation, installation, upgrade or change to process control instrumentation and/or electrical equipment.

Overall, this position plays an integral role in ensuring process control instrumentation, electrical equipment and the Water Operations SCADA system is functioning correctly, safely and at peak performance to support the safe and efficient operation of the City's drinking water systems.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Three (3) year College Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technology or related discipline
  • Completion of Valid Industrial Electrician (442A) Certificate of Qualification OR Construction and Maintenance Electrician (309A) (840 Hours of In-School Training as outlined in the Apprenticeship Training Standards of the Ontario Colleges of Trades, Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities)

Experience

  • Six (6) years performing duties related to the abovementioned responsibilities.
  • One (1) year working with SCADA services and networks

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • General knowledge of Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) communication systems
  • General knowledge of legislation, including but not limited to the following:
  • Safe Drinking Water Act, 200
  • O. Reg. 170/03, Drinking Water Systems
  • Drinking Water Works Permits
  • Municipal Drinking Water Licences
  • Permit to Take Water
  • Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Demonstrated ability to:
  • Perform in a manner which is consistent with corporate goals, vision, mission and values
  • Identify problems, develop and evaluate options, and suggest or implement solutions utilizing reason, judgment and prescribed resources
