    PURPOSE OF JOB:

    The Microbiology Laboratory Technician II performs laboratory analyses and tests. Prepares samples, sets up instruments, runs tests and reads, interprets and releases results.

    Shift: Monday - Friday 9:00am - 5:30pm, weekends on rotation

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Accurately read and result a minimum 108 systemic aerobic cultures and sensitivities per shift using approved procedures and protocols.
    • Work up recheck and add on requests
    • Accurately read and report all Kirby Bauer disc diffusion sensitivity results as needed
    • Accurately read and result Blood Cultures using Bactec instrument and Gram stains
    • Perform all required quality control such as recording temperatures, marking reagents, and all supplies with applicable dates and initials.
    • Print, reconcile, and turn in daily pending report
    • Exercises judgment in evaluating and reporting results.
    • Check pending/manifest daily.
    • Sets up and runs laboratory tests.
    • Read and release test results.
    • Cross-train and develop knowledge of multiple specialties within department/lab.
    • Applies job skills and lab policies and procedures to complete a variety of tasks.
    • Reads, understands and follows applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), including safety and quality procedures. Maintains clean and organized work area. Restocks supplies as needed.
    • May be cross-trained to perform other duties, such as performing less complex tests. Participates in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation.
    • Consult with senior peers on non-complex Microbiology tasks to learn through experience.
    • May be asked to participate in enterprise initiatives, special projects, and other duties as assigned.

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

    • High school diploma or equivalent with 6 months experience as a Microbiology Lab Aide, 1 year Vet Technician experience and/or 2, 3 or 4 year degree in Science-related field.

    REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Laboratory skills, with experience setting up, running and reading lab tests and operating lab instruments preferred.
    • Knowledge of lab equipment and procedures.
    • Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology and Microbiology procedures and equipment is helpful.

    • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) as appropriate

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    • Extensive sitting, phone, and computer use
    • Capable of standing continuously for up to 2 hours
    • Extend and reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers
    • Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch
    • May be required to lift, move, and carry up to 20 lbs.
    • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
    • Hearing ability to effectively communicate via the telephone and in person
    • Ability to communicate verbally on the phone and in person
    • Fluency in the English language
    • Extended hours may be needed

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    • Laboratory environment with potential biohazards present
    • Works under close to moderate supervision with limited latitude for independent judgment.
    • Normally receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new assignments.
    • Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards. A complete list of such chemicals is available from department supervision.
