The Role:


Key Responsibilities-

  • Enhances the capacity of PHO to analyze data and generate forecasts using timeseries models, spatial analysis techniques, and mixed spatialtemporal approaches;
  • Identifies appropriate statistical tools for use in signal detection related to public health surveillance, preparedness, and response in Ontario;
  • Works collaboratively to guide epidemiological colleagues in the optimal use of methods for study design and statistical analysis of epidemiological data;
  • Assembles a documentary record of biostatistical practices and resources at PHO;
  • Contributes to the design and analysis of large, populationbased cohort studies that are conducted by PHO and its affiliates including input on optimal approaches to sampling and measurement, and on the use of data analysis methods appropriate for multilevel data and repeated measurements;
  • Serves as a resource on statistical issues in laboratory research and evaluation such as characterization of diagnostic test performance within the PHO diagnostic microbiology laboratory service;
  • Engages in knowledge translation activities, including presentation of findings, initiatives, and relevant PHO activities at meetings and conferences, including national and international scientific meetings, and builds and maintains a network of external partners at Ontario research and educational institutions;
  • Engages in improving the understanding of biostatistical methods as tools that support optimal public health decision making, through both formal and informal internal teaching and mentorship activities;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills-

  • Knowledge of statistical and biostatistical methods and techniques to provide expertise and to identify appropriate statistical tools for use in signal detection related to public health surveillance, preparedness, and response in Ontario;
  • Skills in collaborating with projects which involve the integration of biostatistical methods and concepts into policy briefs, scientific papers and reports, for communication with stakeholders;
  • Skills and expertise in working in providing consultative advice within a multidisciplinary work environment;
  • Knowledge and expertise related to the utilization of statistical software packages (e.g,. R, SAS, SPSS, Stata)

Education and Experience-

  • Masterslevel degree in statistics, biostatistics or related field.
  • At least five years experience in statistics, biostatistics or related field.

Attributes and Competencies-

  • Oral communication skills to provide consultative advice and expertise on statistical methods and construction of statistical tools and models to contacts throughout PHO and other external stakeholders;
  • Presentation skills to present findings, initiatives, and relevant PHO activities at meetings and conferences, including national and international scientific meetings.
  • Training skills to conduct formal and informal teaching on statistical techniques to PHO management and staff.
  • Develops and maintains relationships across PHO to identify and define biostatistical tools, methods and software and provide consultative services to support the PHO's role in public health research, surveillance, planning, and disease control activities;
  • Provides advice to colleagues in the use of methods to support their epidemiology data and analysis needs ;
  • Develops and maintains relationships and works in collaboration with biostatistical colleagues in public health and academia.
  • Works within biostatistical methodologies and the parameters of PHO requirements;
  • Develops innovative biostatistical techniques/approaches to be used within a public health context;
  • Provides input to grant development and research plans with regards to statistical approaches.
  • Determines how to convert research ideas into statistical hypothesis
  • Identifies and develops the infrastructure and networks (e.g., with academic partners) necessary to build capacity for biostatistical capacity within PHO;
  • Guides and facilitates statistical analysis of public health assessment and surveillance data;
  • Contributes to the design and analysis of large, populationbased cohort studies that are conducted by PHO and its affiliates;
  • Serves as a resource on statistical issues in laboratory research and evaluation such as characterization of diagnostic test performance within the PHO diagnostic microbiology laboratory service;
  • Mentors assigned students;
  • Works to facilitate the use of appropriate statistical methods by public health personnel in Ontario via team building, knowledge translation, and mentorship activities;
  • Provides technical leadership to epidemiologists and scientists in development their research plans with regards to statistical analysis/methodologies.

Duration:
Contract (Fixed Term), 11 month
