The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is a national museum dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights.

It is the first national museum in Canada to be built outside the National Capital Region.

Located in the heart of Canada in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the CMHR rises from the Prairie earth at The Forks, which has been a meeting place for over six thousand years.

_ Purpose of Position_:


The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is centered around the idea that respect and understanding of human rights can serve as a positive force for change in the world.

The Manager, Special Events and will support our collective efforts to build a workplace culture that is inclusive, innovative and focused on inspiring action.


Reporting to the Director, Business Development, the Manager, Special Events plays a key leadership role in the achievement of annual revenue targets through the development and management of all initiatives related to the promotion, production and coordination of events that will be produced within designated rental spaces at the Museum on behalf of and/or in collaboration with rental clients.

The position will develop and implement strategies designed to encourage facility rental opportunities for a diverse and varied clientele, will represent the Museum in dealings with rental clients, and will act as senior liaison between rental clients, the CMHR Facilities department (i.e. security, maintenance, etc.) and event catering provider(s).

The incumbent will be a strong and thoughtful leader and communicator, critical thinker and innovator, and will bring a collaborative approach to their role


_ Key Responsibilities_:


  • Creates a culture that promotes respect, equity, inclusion and innovation, and models antiracist and accountable behaviours.
  • Develops and executes tactics to support the CMHR's strategic objectives, and to prioritize new and emerging issues and opportunities that may impact the organization.
  • Provides mentorship and coaching using performancedriven strategies focused on growth and development.
  • Manages the daily operations of the Special Events and Facilities Rentals department, including the supervision of subordinate staff and the provision of direction to junior staff and occasionally volunteers.
  • Oversees the 400+ events per year that involve internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manages the department's operational budget through effective resource and expense management.
  • Achieves annual revenue targets for Facility Rentals sales, based on yearly budget forecasts.
  • Prepares and remains current on policies and procedures for all components of a strategy and operational plan for facility rentals, including assessment of CMHR rental spaces and a rentals rate schedule, and makes recommendations to the Director, Business Development.
  • In consultation with the Communications and Marketing team, reviews and updates the collateral material for print and website to support the promotion of CMHR facility rentals to several target markets.
  • Provides advice and suggestions with respect to the design and development of rental spaces within the CMHR that will optimize the accommodation of rental clients and meet the potential for diverse requirements.
  • Develops and implements sales strategies that will position the CMHR as the premiere offsite rental facility in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with rental clients and actively seeks out new clients through participation in professional associations and tourismfocused organizations and businesses (i.e., meeting, convention and event planners).
  • Oversees the daytoday operations of Cloud Coffee and the onsite caterer.

_ Required Qualifications_:


  • Completed education at the postsecondary level in a related field (Management, Tourism or Event Management) and a minimum of 5 years of related work experience in a similar role (event production, event management).
  • Minimum of 3 years of leadership experience.
  • Commitment to human rights principles, including respect, equity, inclusion and dignity for all.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a sales environment (networking, negotiating, contract management, outbound sales). Proven track record/history of exceeding sales targets/quotas.
