Practicum Instructor

Job purpose


The primary function of the Practicum Instructor is to provide support to the Practicum Coordinator in the implementation of practicum, workplace practicum and GWE for NSCECE.

This is done by helping to develop, promote, and coordinate practicum content as well as advise students in their practicum placements.

The incumbent applies NSCECE core values, policies, and procedures to maintain and enhance a standard of quality that fosters a positive student experience and contributes to a reputation for excellence within sector.


Qualifications

  • Degree or Diploma in Early Childhood Education; and a Certificate in Adult Education;
  • A minimum of five years' experience working in regulated child care or related ELCC programs;
  • Computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, and database experience related to student information management;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop early learning curriculum using a reflective planning cycle;
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and evaluate programs, practices, and early childhood environments;
  • Knowledge of NSCECE program and policies is an asset;
  • Travel across HRM is required, with the possibility of further travel if necessary.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Placement opportunities_
  • Help to maintain community partner contacts and actively participate in ELCC community networks to identify potential community partners;
  • Identify new practicum opportunities to meet changing needs and to maximize quality student experiences;
  • Respond to student, external, staff, and faculty inquiries concerning practicum and GWE, making referrals where necessary;
  • Evaluate and select possible practicum sites, conduct risk assessment as per NSCECE policy;
  • Evaluate student placement process and experiences by conducting site visits and reviewing student evaluations of placement experiences.

Practicum Instructor

  • Manage Practicum course materials and events_
  • Help to develop and maintain supporting data, documentation, templates, and manuals required by students and placement sites (in collaboration with Practicum Coordinator and faculty team);
  • Maintain uptodatecopies of all necessary practicum/GWE documentation, including guidelines, evaluations, confirmations of practicums, attendance records, and distribute and collect as required for records;
  • Support in coordination and/or delivery of Practicum I introductory modules (18 hours);
  • Prepare and orient students to practicum or GWE and facilitate mandatory seminars;
  • Schedule and deliver required makeup seminars;
  • Place Students; evaluate student progress; assign grades_
  • Help in arranging placements and assign advisors for students;
  • Organize and coordinate spaces for seminar;
  • Maintain records and file official practicum documents in student files;
  • Maintain student placement information on Campus Login;
  • Review and post grades for each student using Campus Login;
  • Communicate with students and placement sites;
  • Supervise, Mentor, Coach_
  • Interview, hire, support, and mentor Practicum Advisors;
  • Design and offer professional development for Mentor Educators;
  • Support and evaluate students who are completing practicum, workplace practicum or GWE;
  • Provide feedback and support to practicum sites and field placement personnel;
  • Act as backup Practicum/GWE Advisor when required;
  • Resolve conflicts_
  • Liaise with students and host agencies as necessary and advise students with respect to conduct;
  • Coach and support students, Practicum/GWE Advisors, and placement staff in the use of NSCECE problem solving process (See Practicum Handbook for details).
