    To support the everyday operations of The Gateway Outreach Team, to build relationships with Outreach clients and provide housing assistance, and to positively contribute to the Outreach Staff team.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Patrols catchment area each day looking for people experiencing homelessness and offering support.
  • Develops trusting relationships with people experiencing homelessness and sleeping rough.
  • Networks with community agencies to aid in outreach potential.
  • Provides support, assistance, and encouragement to clients on caseload.
  • Responds to concerned citizen calls forwarded through Streets to Homes in timely manner.
  • Makes necessary referrals to shelter, health care, professional counseling, spiritual and religious care, and other relevant supports.
  • Supports, advocates for, and refers clients to housing and related resources with the goal of reintegration into community.
  • Conducts initial intake assessments to determine immediate needs and appropriate supports.
  • Assists Outreach Supervisor with data analysis for program, recording statistics, writing, and submitting reports to Gateway and Streets to Homes (funder).
  • Recommends and assists in the development and revision of Outreach Program policies.
  • Performs all necessary clerical duties for client documentation, including Streets to Homes Documentation, computer entries, and logbook entries.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a permanent full-time position based on 40 hours per week , Saturday to Wednesday – 8-hour shifts.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the job including extensive walking, outdoor work in a variety of public locations, including streets, parks, ravines, under bridges and taking public transit, while carrying a backpack with outreach gear to provide services and supports to people who are homeless.
  • QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • 2 years of College Social Services education and/or Psychology diploma or certificate.
  • Certification in First Aid/CPR and Crisis intervention training.
  • Certification in ASIST.
  • Hostel Standards Training Certificate an asset.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and a current copy of a Driver's abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable
  • EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of two-year experience in the field of Mental Health or Addictions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of homelessness, addictions, and mental health.
  • Strong working knowledge of community resources.
  • SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Strong command of English language and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
