    Job Summary

    The Environment Section is looking for a detail-oriented, dynamic, and experienced individual to support the various environmental sustainability strategies, initiatives and programs at the City of Mississauga. This individual will embrace our environmental sustainability culture and be passionate about advancing environmental priorities in circular economy and climate change.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Under the direction of the Supervisor, Environmental Sustainability, the successful candidate will:

  • Execute, coordinate and support projects, programs and strategies identified in the City's Circular Economy Roadmap and Climate Change Action Plan.
  • Coordinate and support the City's Internal Waste Diversion Working Group and create and manage project controls such as data gathering, management and analytical processes.
  • Engage and collaborate with internal and external groups of interest and key networks on environmental matters.
  • Coordinate the implementation, training, education and awareness of the City's new Reduction of Single-use Items in City Facilities and Operations policy across Corporate Departments.
  • Support the data collection, annual progress reporting and development of key performance indicators
  • Support the transition of the Ontario blue box regulations
  • Research and prepare reports, correspondence, oral presentations for prospective community partners, client groups, and internal management teams.
  • Track new environmental sustainability regulations, disclosures and policies (e.g. single-use plastics, organics, climate change/air quality and international sustainability disclosures).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Skills and Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree from a recognized university or college in environmental studies, engineering, or related field (a focus on environmental sustainability is preferred);
  • Minimum of three (3) years or equivalent combination of education and experience in environmental sustainability programs or similar initiatives;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the principles of environmental policy development, familiarity with environmental legislation, environmental sustainability, community development, and municipal administration;
  • Must have strong organizational, analytical, problem solving and research skills, including the ability to effectively handle concurrent projects strategically and creatively under deadlines;
  • Strong research, statistical, graphical and numerical skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including strong presentation skills, report writing skills with the ability to liaise effectively with external agencies, stakeholders, and the general public;
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, employees in other service areas, internal and external customers (other City employees and the general public), regional partners and provincial groups;
  • Demonstrated skill with Microsoft Office Suite applications and databases.
  • Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Certification in Corporate Social Responsibility or Environmental, Social and Governance or equivalent would be deemed an asset.
