Your opportunity:


Working as part of the Environmental Health & Safety team, the Technician provides support to Health & Safety Officers with inspections and safety operations for the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, including but not limited to their research expansion into a new state-of-the-art facility with resulting laboratory relocations.

The Technician consults with laboratory staff and management to understand the requirements and expectations for new lab setup, supports the development of relocation plans, conducts routine and post-relocation inspections to identify any issues or areas that require further attention, and coordinates with utility providers and facility management as required to ensure laboratories meet required specifications and compliance.

The Technician ensures that all necessary safety protocols are followed during packing, moving, and unpacking of hazardous materials or chemicals, and that any applicable biological safety permitting, chemical fume hood performance, physical infrastructure and WHMIS compliance needs are met.

The Technician coordinates with building operations and the Manager of Joint Health & Safety Committees on operational needs for Temerty Medicine, conducting routine and transitional inspections, monitoring observance of health and safety/security regulations and troubleshooting issues to closure.

This position provides significant care and attention to Temerty Medicine laboratory staff, students and Principal Investigators (PIs) with respect to chemical, biological andradiation safety disciplines.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Monitoring observance of health and safety/security regulations for a large number of laboratories as part of a team
  • Probing for information with laboratory staff and management to understand the safety requirements and expectations for new laboratory setups
  • Coordinating with facility management and Health and Safety Officers to ensure new laboratory spaces meet required specifications and comply with University of Toronto requirements.
  • Developing and maintaining procedures for relocation plans, including timelines, resource allocation, etc.
  • Ensuring all necessary safety protocols are followed during the packing, moving, and unpacking of hazardous materials or chemicals.
  • Conducting routine inspections of assigned facilities
  • Providing advice to others on hazardous material management practices and procedures
  • Implementing plans and processimprovements for service activities related to biological, chemical and radiation safety programs.

Essential Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field (e.g. science, life sciences) or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • Minimum four (4) years' relevant experience in managing various aspects of health, safety, and environment
  • Experience with assessing compliance during visits in permitted labs using a predefined checklist and working with and providing reports to compliance inspectors within a large academic setting.
  • Knowledge of lab design and experience with lab set up, performance testing and decommissioning.
  • Professional Certification such as Safety Engineering/Industrial Hygiene/Occupational Health and Safety/Biosafety (one or more of CRSP, CIH/ROH) or in the process of obtaining.
  • Professional Memberships/Affiliations in one or more of: Association of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals, Occupational Hygiene Association of Ontario or in the process of obtaining.
  • Ability to develop strong working relationships with faculty conducting a wide range of research
  • Demonstrated experience monitoring and maintaining laboratory equipment, consumables and supplies
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a larger team
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow established process
