$23.84


GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This position provides a range of outreach services to youth ages 12 to 29, their families and community primarily in low income, high density, priority neighbourhoods designated as improvement areas to enhance or maintain youth wellness and leadership.

Mentoring, connection, supportive counselling and community development are used to engage hard to reach youth who are faced with multiple and intersectional barriers to access resources and to thrive.

This position carries responsibility for prevention, early intervention, case management, program development and community outreach services for TNG. This position reports to Manager, Child and Youth Services and is part of
CUPE Local 7797.

Hours of work are 35 per week, on a schedule including evenings and weekends. Schedule is varied and flexible to be available to youth, attend community meetings and respond to incidents.


MAJOR DUTIES:


  • Initiate, develop, implement and participate in community outreach activities
  • Reach out to and engage atrisk youth in activities that promote assets, competencies and resiliency, including youth with disabilities and from diverse communities. (Newcomers, First Nations, those racialized, diverse genders, religious and/or cultural practices, LGBTQ2S+ etc.)
  • Carry out service coordination functions, (i.e., brokerage/advocacy/resourcing/case conferencing), act as an advocate and provide general information and referral services to designated youth on recreation, housing, employment, education, health and other services.
  • Work collaboratively with youth, parents, health workers, schools, police and youth service providers to develop effective service delivery plans that ensure that youth have access to programs, services and opportunities needed for healthy development by:
  • engaging youth to identify issues, needs, goals, aspirations, skills, abilities and services needed as well as barriers to accessing these services;
- and providing youth with information, contacts and referrals needed to facilitate access to programs, services and opportunities.
- coach, mentor and match youth to mentees to promote leadership opportunities.

  • Lead groups in response to identified service requests and community needs.
  • Participate in community safety related tables and networks.
  • Facilitate connections between youth and their neighbourhood and promote awareness of the positive role of youth in the community.
  • Build an understanding of the needs, issues, goals, aspirations, skills and abilities of youth through community and asset mapping in local neighbourhoods.
  • Conduct environmental scans of neighbourhoods to identify and understand emerging issues, service gaps and opportunities for action to build on community capacity.

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Child and Youth Worker Diploma from a recognized postsecondary institution or equivalent relevant education and experience
  • Three or more years of related professional experience working with youth ages 12 to 2
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and negotiate effectively within a multidisciplinary team of service providers.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the life experiences and needs of the youth community.
  • Lived experience would be an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including, but not limited to, the abilities to relate to people, manage conflict, and adapt to change, awareness of the emotions of self and others, and commitment to a collaborative, respectful workplace.
