We are hiring a
Program Supervisor to lead the growth of the Calgary Food Bank within the sector.


This position is responsible for all staff and functions related to the distribution of Emergency Food Hampers from the Calgary Food Bank.

This includes, but is not limited to, program planning and development, staff hiring, training and management, quality control, partner training, consulting services, and partnership initiation and coordination.

The Program Supervisor reports to Manager, Client Services.


Primary Responsibilities:


  • The daytoday supervision of the Client Services team members and program areas.
  • Provide input and leadership on client services policy development, education, and maintenance, ensuring a high standard of service to the community and to Calgary Food Bank clients.
  • Acting as a resource on employee relations issues within the Client Services department.
  • Supervision of the Client Services Program Coordinator and/or Client Services Associate team.
  • Data administration and reporting using the client database.
  • Participates in or leads program evaluation as required.
  • Creation and maintenance of documentation as required.
  • Carry out other related duties as required.
  • Assist with daytoday Client Services operations when required (i.e., vacation coverage or sick coverage).

As a supervisor you are responsible for:

  • Organizing and prioritizing work requirements for staff, ensuring tasks and duties are managed appropriately.
  • Ensuring compliance with the Calgary Food Bank's policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring applicable administrative and supervisory functions defined in the Calgary Food Bank people policies are completed. For example, performance evaluations, job descriptions and management of employee time in the payroll system.
  • Liaising with key stakeholders and the management team in support of effective people management, needs assessments, orientation, and followthrough.
  • Managing performance related issues and liaising with management team members for support when required.
  • Assisting your team towards personal development goals.
  • Upholding policy and contributing to the Health and Safety of all persons accessing and working at the Calgary Food Bank.

Decision Making and Leadership Capabilities:

The decisions made by this position have organization wide implications. Due to these implications, input on decisions will often be sought from key stakeholders. High impact decisions will be made in consultation with the Client Services Manager and senior leadership team.


Independent decisions include:

  • How best to meet defined objectives and targets with reference to departmental responsibilities and organizational resources.
  • Translating multiple research streams into one 'best' recommendation for the Food Bank.
  • Balance the needs of people with those of the organization.

Education and Experience Required:


  • An undergraduate degree is required, a specialization in community development is an asset. Will consider relevant education and experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years' relevant work experience.
  • Broad experience in the Calgary nonprofit and food insecurity sector.
  • Certificate in Non-Profit Management would be considered an asset.
  • Project management experience would be considered an asset.

Skills and Capabilities:


  • Possess a high level of interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively with diverse group of stakeholders including staff, volunteers, clients, and the general public, including public speaking.
  • Strong issue and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of multiple functions in a nonprofit environment preferred.
  • Familiarity with data and statistical analysis
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Office 365 products, experience with client databases and a keen interest in technology.
  • Ability to initiate, develop and implement strategies.
  • Familiarity with budgeting and forecasting.
  • Able to build and maintain lasting relationships with line departments and key external stakeholders.
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills.
