How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:

Under supervision, the Field Assistant, Aquatic Monitoring and Management carries out Lake Ontario waterfront and inland lake monitoring and data collection in support of TRCA's environmental monitoring programs and projects.

This position also involves equipment maintenance and environmental data entry. This is a field position.


Major Responsibilities:


Perform the following tasks under supervision:

  • Perform field work and environmental data collection, including fish, benthic invertebrate, water quality, sediment, and aquatic habitat following specific protocols.
  • Use various types of monitoring equipment, including boats, GPS units, water quality instruments, water level / temperature loggers and biological sampling equipment such as electrofishing units and various types of nets.
  • Maintain equipment (storage, organization, minor repairs).
  • Organize field data records and enter environmental monitoring data into internal and external databases.
  • All activities are expected to be performed in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupation Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs. All necessary personal protective equipment (provided by TRCA) must be used and maintained in good condition.
  • Assist with other field work as required.

What will you need to succeed:

  • Post-secondary education in biology, environmental science, resource management, or a related field.
  • G Class Driver's Licence.
  • Ability to work in, on, and around water (including Lake Ontario).
  • Ability to identify fish commonly found in the Toronto area is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with biological sampling equipment, including boat and backpack electrofishing units, sampling nets, and environmental monitoring instruments is an asset.
  • Comfortable working on watercraft from canoes to vessels up to 32 feet in length.
  • Ability to lift up to 22 kg (50 lbs).
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, and ability to work in a team setting.
  • Computer literacy.
