The Coordinator Learning Services Inclusive Learning - Inter-Agency focus uses a strength-based approach to enable student access to curriculum learning in the classroom environment.

Take a Hike (TAH) is a full-time alternate high school program for youth who were formerly disengaged.

Embedded in the public-school system, the program is offered in partnership with the Take a Hike Foundation and community volunteers.

Over the past 19 years, TAH has seen hundreds of students dramatically increase attendance; expand social and emotional skills; and improve mental and physical health and well-being.


Program Objectives:

Increase student attendance and engagement in school and community.

Engage students to support improvements in their own mental and physical health and well-being.

Improve academic success, leading to high school graduation.


Take a Hike Pillars:

Academics:
students have the opportunity to complete all courses required for dogwood diploma.


Adventure-Based Learning:
students are engaged in experiential and land-based learning one day each week, and during three long wilderness trips.


Community Involvement:
connects students to their community and offers them a chance to give back.


Therapy:
embedded registered clinical counsellors provide students twitch psychoeducational support.


This Coordinator is the teacher in the Take a Hike (TAH) Program and, as such, supports the day-to-day implementation of the TAH Program including the provision of inclusive instruction at the Grade 8 to 12 levels, the development and implementation of educational plans (Individual Education Plans, Positive Behavior Support Plans, Safety Plans, etc.), and the coordination of district and community-based therapeutic supports.

This Coordinator leads Integrated Case Management and liaises with district, community, MoE and MCFD supports and services. This Coordinator designs individualized community or outdoor-based instruction for students and develops and implements robust post-secondary transition plans.


This Coordinator uses inclusive and universal practice including but not limited to Universal Design for Learning, Trauma Informed Practice, Teen Mental Health Literacy, social emotional learning and the First People's Principles of Learning.


This Coordinator works with Learning Services, Inclusive Learning to build networks and communities of practice across inter-agency programs and Alternate Education Programs; working closely with Learning Services to investigate, assess and implement educational theories and practices to transform professional practice across the district.


Qualifications and Experience:

Masters or equivalent in Inclusion and Equity.

Training in Outdoor Education

Wilderness Safety training

Successful classroom teaching experience


Successful inclusive learning teaching experience in the areas of supporting students with Ministry of Education Special Needs designations including students presenting with social, emotional, mental health and behavioral support needs.


Successful and varied experience liaising with provincial resource programs, the Ministry of Children and Family Development and various agencies supporting children, youth and their families.

Successful experience supporting educators in the work of creating and sustaining inclusive and accessible learning environments and opportunities for students with social, emotional, mental health and behavioral support needs

Successful experience working as a member of various school and district-level teams in support of student success.

Course work/relevant experience in inclusion and/or counselling with specific focus on inclusive instructional and assessment practices, positive behavior support intervention, functional behavior assessment
