    Community Outreach Workers (COWs) are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 5047 (CUPE). The CUPE collective agreement can be accessed by clicking HERE

    Due to the nature of the position a car is required as travel will include all schools within HRCE (mileage is reimbursed).

    The Community Outreach Worker is responsible for developing a proactive approach to connecting families and community groups in order to facilitate support and services to students. Working with an assigned group of schools, the Community Outreach Worker will establish an active network of community groups representing the diverse nature of the community and build bridges to connect families and schools with the ultimate goal of improving student success. Consistent with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and the Halifax Regional Centre for Education policies, the Community Outreach Worker will work within an established accountability framework to ensure effective connections and communication exist between the school, the families and other appropriate community agencies. Working collaboratively with Principals and other staff, the Community Outreach Worker reports directly to a designated SchoolsPlus Facilitator.

    Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in Social Sciences (i.e. Sociology, Psychology, Community Studies, Family Studies) or equivalent through a combination of experience and a relevant Diploma/Certificate from a recognized community college;
  • Minimum three (3) years successful experience working with students and their families;
  • Direct knowledge and experience of communities served considered an asset;
  • Experience with collaborative practices and involvement in community development initiatives, community boards and/or hubs considered an asset;
  • Valid Nova Scotia driver's license and reliable vehicle.
  • Rate of Pay:

    This is a 12-month per year CUPE position with a starting annual salary of $1,993.35 paid every two weeks. Salary is based on a six (6) step scale with step increases occurring annually in accordance with the Collective Agreement as shown below.

    The annual salary for term positions less than one year is pro-rated over the length of the term.

    Hours of Work:

    Seven (7) hours per day (excluding lunch) totalling 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

    Vacation:

    Community Outreach Workers initially receive three (3) weeks vacation per year (15 days) for the quota period September 1 st to August 31 st . COWs employed less than one year receive 10 vacation days for the first year pro-rated based on start date. Term COWs receive 4% vacation pay on each pay.
