Job description:

Our Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) officers are the eyes and ears of Canada's waterways.

They ensure mariners' safety 24/7 in one of our 12 MCTS centres across Canada, from Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL, to Victoria, BC.


To become an MCTS officer, we offer fully paid training at the Canadian Coast Guard College in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

The 6-month training program is offered in English and French and is followed by 4 to 12 months on-the-job training in one of our 12 MCTS centres across Canada.

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Listening for and answering distress and safety calls from mariners on the water
  • Monitoring and coordinating marine traffic to prevent accidents
  • Broadcasting safety information to vessels in Canadian waters, like weather and navigational warnings
  • Preventing the entry of defective or deficient vessels into Canadian waters
  • Ensuring compliance with Canadian maritime policies and regulations

Education, Experience and Skills:


  • Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Secondary school diploma or a combination of education, training, and experience
  • Skills in memory, coding, spatial reasoning, and more
  • Able to type at least 30 wordsperminute with 95% accuracy
  • Works well in a team
  • Organized and flexible
  • Enjoys quick decision making

$48,616.00-$76,088.00 per year

  • Day shift
  • Evening shift
