Position Overview
The VGCA Accounting Shared Services Centre provides essential back-office accounting functions for General Ledger, Inventory, Accounts Receivable and Affiliates, Accounts Payable and Fixed Assets for multiple VW Group Companies including Volkswagen, Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Chattanooga factory production, electric vehicle infrastructure and automotive software and technology in Canada as well as in the United States.
The Senior Accountant is responsible for the overall integrity and timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, as well as additional financial reporting and disclosures as required by the parent company, VW AG. The Senior Accountant supports the integrity of relevant internal controls by certifying all GL activities are prepared, processed, edited and posted based on proper documentation, timely and efficiently. The role manages the month-end close process to ensure the accurate and timely posting of general ledger entries and the proper IFRS accounting treatment of all transactions. This individual works closely with the business as well as Group Accounting to align reporting objectives and assist with streamlining local processes. This role is also required to work closely and align with the other Senior Accountants (responsible for different entities) and manage any applicable external or internal audit requirements.
Reporting into the Manager, Technical Accounting and Reporting, this individual will work closely with Volkswagen Group America Treasury and Group Accounting in Wolfsburg to align reporting objectives. This role is also required to manage related external audit requirements for its in-scope entities.
Key Responsibilities
- Support in the process of monthly, quarterly and annual accounting close, including preparing and booking of journal entries, monthly reporting requirements, and financial analysis
- Monthly reporting file submission and validation to VWAG financial reporting system, by the reporting deadlines, which includes obtaining correct and timely information and schedules
- Liaise with VW AG Group Accounting regarding monthly, quarterly and year-end reporting issues and queries as they arise, technical accounting matters, as well as completion of ad-hoc reporting items throughout the year
- Co-ordinate appropriate and timely responses to special requests for information and reports from VWAG
- Research and analyze IFRS accounting issues, offer sound accounting advice to the business, and prepare thorough IFRS Position Papers for internal use and for external auditors (when required)
- Assess the impact of upcoming changes in new IFRS standards relevant to area of responsibility. Align processes/systems/people accordingly
- Document all local accounting treatment changes and communicate with VW AG Group Accounting to ensure compliance with Group guidelines
- Responsible for ensuring that the accounting treatment of all transactions are in accordance with IFRS and the VW Accounting Handbook
- Maintain communication with VW AG Group Accounting in Germany on any accounting changes to current or new processes
- Collaborates with the entity leadership team to understand business needs and the overall activity in the financial statements, ensure business objectives are compliant with IFRS, and assist with reporting requirements through alignment of reporting for the respective systems.
- Responsible for documenting, implementing and monitoring new, existing and proposed processes as well as preparing detailed desk procedures for all role related tasks.
- Completion of general ledger & sub-ledger account reconciliations with prompt follow up and resolution of outstanding reconciling items.
- When required, manage financial statement audits by coordinating the list of audit deliverables, liaising with external auditors on significant accounting issues, and ensuring audit reporting timelines are met.
- Review and support flux preparation and analysis.
- Support the corporate tax team with ad hoc requests needed to complete their filings.
- Support in the implementation of additional information systems as required during the startup phase.
- Co-ordinate with VWAG Group Accounting in the implementation of reporting system upgrades and changes.
- Support all relevant functions within accounting services (such as accounts payable and affiliate accounting); determining how each area's unique issues impact financial reporting and as special requirements are needed
- Preparation of year-end stand-alone financial statements in accordance with IFRS including note disclosures by the prescribed deadlines.
- Maintain appropriate working papers and schedules as required by external auditors, as well as provide thorough explanations, analyses, and responses to audit queries.
- Maintain and test internal control documentation (process narrative/map, control matrixes) as well as desk procedures for all core duties.
Qualifications
Formal Education:
- University and/or college degree in finance/accounting or related discipline
- Completed or working towards a CPA designation considered an asset
- Master's degree considered an asset
Experience:
- 3+ years experience in a finance or accounting related discipline
Skills and Competencies:
- Intermediate to advanced understanding of MS Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Written, oral and presentation to document, articulate and convey functions and processes
- Analytical skills – ability to dissect complex accounting and financial processes and identify risks and process improvements
- Excellent organizational skills
- Works well under daily and monthly deadlines
- Ability to respond quickly to a changing environment
- Team player and customer focused
- Strong business acumen – understanding of large complex organizations and ability to interact with all levels of an organization
- Experience and exposure with IFRS and development/review of full financial statements including notes
- Experience with issuance and accounting for bonds and other financial instruments including derivatives (commercial paper, cross-currency swaps, interest rate swaps etc.)
- Completed or progress towards CPA designation
- Assets: working knowledge of SAP
Salary range is dependent on factors such as industry-based experience, skills, training, credentials, and other qualifications. The salary range for this role is $75,000-80,000, actual pay may vary based on experience, education, and internal compensation practices.
