Organizational Context:


Reporting to the Director of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), the OHS Team Lead (Lead) is accountable for supporting the development, implementation, and administration of the Government of Alberta (GoA) OHS Program in alignment with legislative requirements and organizational priorities.


This role provides direction, guidance and mentorship to support OHS consultants, ensuring the provision of effective and outcome-oriented advisory services to meet client needs and comply with the GoA OHS policy, program, OHS and related legislation, standards, and industry best practices.


Role Responsibilities:


  • Provides strategic and operational leadership with respect to occupational health and safety within the Government of Alberta.
  • Participates in and oversees the development and implementation of complex corporate OHS policies, programs, projects, and initiatives across client departments within a holistic workforce context.
  • Works in collaboration with ER/OHS Managers, leads, and consultants to ensure OHS program development and implementation is coordinated and aligned with stakeholder needs.
  • Provides leadership and technical expertise on OHS policies, programs, and initiatives with governmentwide impact and implications, in partnership and coordination with OHS Consultants within portfolio teams.
  • Keeps abreast of changes in the industry best practices, legislation, and interjurisdictional approaches to creating a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Identifies and provides policy recommendations to senior leadership, ensuring alignment with OHS legislation and department client needs.
  • Supports the delivery of strategic OHS client advisory services to ER/OHS Managers, leads, and consultants, and department clients, ensuring they are supported with the provision of consistent and effective consultative services.
  • Supports the development and implementation of systems, mechanisms, and performance indicators to measure the effectiveness of OHS program and policies across GoA departments.
  • Seeks the advice of the Director of OHS when ambiguity or concerns arise in the implementation and interpretation of policy and program.
  • Works with the ER/OHS Managers, leads, and consultants to ensure department specific needs or programs are addressed in alignment with OHS legislation and the OHS program.
  • Collects, monitors, and analyzes OHS performance data in consultation with Workforce Data and Analytics (WDA), and develops strategies to address negative trends.
  • Collaborates with WDA to develop and implement a comprehensive training and evaluation framework to build competency and capacity among PSC staff and department clients, to enable the proactive prevention of hazards and management of workplace incidents.
  • Provides mentoring and guidance to OHS team members consultants based on the expertise of the Lead.
  • Works with parallel program areas to ensure mutual support, awareness, and alignment with OHS legislation and standards. Parallel program areas include psychological health and safety, employee relations, disability management, business continuity, and more.

Minimum Recruitment Standards:


University graduation in a related field (sciences, human resources, commerce, business, social sciences) plus five years related experience; or equivalent as described.

A related two-year diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution and seven years related experience; or

A related one-year certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution and eight years related experience.
