Position Description:

The Electrophysiology and Ophthalmology Clinical Trials Technician will assist the staff in diverse aspects of electrophysiological and clinical care and will act as a resource person to other clinic staff, trainees and visiting personnel.

The Electrophysiology Technician will work in collaboration with the health care team; will integrate research into practice; create, utilize and/or disseminate new knowledge.


Here's What You'll Get To Do:


Electrophysiology Technician:


  • Perform appropriate and highquality visual electrophysiology tests in kids of all ages and their familiessuch specialized testing including various types and subtypes of VEPs, ERGs, FSTs, EOGs, PERGs, mfERGs, PhNR, Scone ERGs, Light perception threshold testing, pupilometry and dark adaptometry.
  • Perform electrophysiological testing in the outpatient clinic, operating room, and sedation settings.
  • Perform multiple different colour vision assessments.
  • Perform oculovisual assessments on patients undergoing visual electrophysiology testing.
  • Assess patient/family needs related to the relevant procedure, addressing concerns and providing information and support when appropriate.
  • Equipment and supplies maintenance.
  • Ensure that visual electrophysiology reports are in the electronic health records.
  • Maintain testing database and catalogue of all test protocols in Espion for all systems.
  • Collaborate with Medical VEU Director and team members, and Staff ophthalmologists to ensure that all testing is booked appropriately (coordinated with surgical coordinator).
  • Assist with analysis of electrophysiology tests as well as data entry for generation of reports.
  • Collaborate with clinical staff to schedule appropriate ophthalmic procedures for patient care and management; and ensure adherence to appropriate patient care protocols as needed.
  • Participate in continuous education activies and the implementation of evidencebased practice standards/guidelines and protocols. Contribute to and participate in educational programs regarding Visual Electrophysiology teaching and training.
  • Daily participation in the Hospital's Workload Measurement tool (GRASP).
  • Accountable to align activities and performance with strategic goals and objectives of the Hospital for Sick Children.
  • Participate in the Performance Management Program annually, including the development of annual performance objectives.
  • Participate in hospital and departmental activities, initiatives and adhere to requirements.

Clinical Trial Technician:


  • Collaborate closely with Ocular Genetics Clinical team including Staff ophthalmologists, Clinical trials coordinator and Clinical research technologists.
  • Be an integral team member of the Clinical Trials Group to implement various test protocols in International and National multicentric and local Clinical Trials.
  • Perform vision assessments for distance and near using multiple testing methods.
  • Perform set up and perform visual mobility tests including maze testing.
  • Perform machine test up and perform various visual fields.
  • Implement electrophysiological test protocols on all systems (ERG, FST, VEP, PhNR).
  • Perform ophthalmic imaging including fundus photography and optical coherence tomography.
  • Perform Adaptive Optics imaging.
  • Complete clinical research forms for performed tests (vision test, visual fields etc).
  • Data transfer from machines to clinical research coordinator.
