The Opportunity


Reporting to the Vice President, Property, and working closely with business leaders and your peers, we are looking for a Commercial Property Underwriting Specialist to join our team.

What You Will Do

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Underwrite construction (contractors or builder's risk), property and equipment breakdown or crime exposures including but not limited to builders' risk, contractor's equipment, commercial property and property portion of package accounts across Canada.
  • Review submissions, identify hazards and exposures, evaluate risks, determine terms, establish capacity, set price, discuss with facultative reinsurers, and negotiate with brokers for new business, renewals, or project extensions. Terms provided will be based on TMC's underwriting guidelines.
  • Active use of interpersonal relationshipbuilding skills will be used by the individual to connect TMC with brokers, MGA's, reinsurers and customers on new business or renewal case opportunities.
  • Working collaboratively with brokers, the individual will seek out solutions to find a way for TMC to assist their client via property or another line of coverage available through TMC. Periodic responsibilities will include the need to attend and participate in insurance industry, reinsurance, or broker events.
  • Working collaboratively alongside representatives from other lines of business, internal or external risk control and internal or external claims staff with a focus on delivering exceptional service to TMC brokers, MGA's and customers.
  • The individual will operate within their underwriting authority to ensure TMC's guidelines have been followed. In addition, the individual will work alongside their colleagues and the VP Property to ensure TMC's governance and control ambitions are addressed through peer audits or file reviews within the established timelines outlined.
  • Will work with the VP Property to meet established thresholds relating to gross premium, net premium, new business, renewal retention, inflation uplift, rate uplift and profitability targets for the various property and equipment breakdown portfolios. The individual will also work with SVP Commercial Insurance as well as representatives from other lines of business to ensure crosssell targets for topline are also achieved.
  • Developing and adhering to standards and maintaining underwriting discipline in line with the established underwriting framework.
  • Understanding and enhancing underwriting strategies, developing new business propositions, documenting renewal strategies and plans, enhancing value propositions, and working with others to build marketing messages and materials.
  • Conduct analysis of lead carrier or broker manuscript policy wordings.
  • Providing technical training and other learning and development opportunities to Underwriters, Underwriting Assistants and other applicable staff.

Who You Are
You are experienced underwriter with broad property underwriting experience across various sectors of the economy. You are team player with a positive attitude who thrives in a consensus culture with an emphasis on collaboration.

You are a self-starter who is excited by the opportunity to jump right in and can come up to speed quickly.

You are comfortable working on a lean team and are not afraid to roll up your sleeves and do the work that needs to be done.


  • 8+ years of experience
  • Established expertise in commercial property underwriting in the midmarket, upper midmarket, risk managed or specialty space
  • Understanding of Equipment Breakdown Insurance coverages and service requirements for exposures
