Underground Superintendent


Firma Contracting is currently seeking an experienced Superintendent to work on underground / water & sewer projects located in Edmonton.

The Superintendent is responsible for field leadership and delivery of projects specific to their scope / expertise and must provide direction to field personnel to meet and exceed KPIs, targets and client expectations related to project budget, production, schedule, HSE management / performance, and quality management / performance and measures / mitigations / contingencies / corrective actions are in place to ensure project success.


Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Quality management
  • working with project management and survey / consultant teams to ensure that workmanship meets / exceeds specifications;
  • Health and safety management including hazard identification and analysis, worker competencies and HSE reporting
  • Assist the Project Manager with estimates as needed;
  • Prepare regular forecasts and needs assessments with the project management team in terms of resource allocation to ensure schedule / milestones are maintained;
  • Conduct a prejob hazard assessment during the initial walk through of the site, prior the start of work;
  • Review project estimate/budget, schedule, material, manpower and resource/equipment requirements with the Project Manager;
  • Complete weekly safety inspections, document/report findings and ensure accountability / enforcement of corrective actions;
  • Maintain a daily report of project occurrences, weather, progress / production, incidents / near misses, subcontractors, etc. and communicate these with the project management team;
  • Ensure crews and equipment are supervised at all times throughout the shift. If the site supervisor must leave the site for any reason, then he or she must designate an interim foreman/lead hand in their absence;
  • Responsible for full site layout, laydown areas / material storage, traffic / pedestrian accommodation and site security;
  • Ensure that all necessary equipment to complete the work is available, well maintained and properly managed to ensure optimum performance. Follow up on repairs as needed with the Project Manager;
  • Coordinate material delivery and trucking requirements with the Project Manager as needed;
  • Monitor performance, progress and productivity of the project, and ensures the alignment of the construction to the project plans and drawings;
  • Assess and review any issues or items out of scope that arise and discuss with the Project Manager;
  • Lead and participate in Safety Meetings, Toolbox Meetings, Site Inspections;
  • Assist with incident reporting requirements;
  • Liaise between project manager, field personnel and office staff to ensure clear communication and accurate/timely action;
  • Performance management including: evaluations, mentoring, training and support for field personnel;
  • Responsible for proper project closeout by ensuring the completion of all project specifications and addressing project deficiencies within the required timeframe;
  • Conduct oneself in a professional manner with honesty and integrity.

Required Skills:


  • 5+ years of experience as a Superintendent on sewer & water projects;
  • Underground utility rehabilitation / replacement experience is required;
  • Strong time management skills able to keep crews to task and maintain an established work schedule to complete the projects in a timely fashion;
  • Organized and able to complete regular project documentation;
  • Able to work collaboratively with the project management team;
  • Able to backstop supervisory requirements on site as needed;
  • Strong communication skills able to delegate and provide instructions clearly with sufficient detail;
  • Proven leadership capabilities and able to mentor workers for advancement;
  • Valid driver's licence and clean driver's abstract.
