Position Summary:


The incumbent leads, at their respective centre/location(s), the provision of TLC English/literacy/academic learning support services to GBC students both online and in-person.

In support of instruction and under the general direction of the Manager, TLC, the incumbent leads development and delivery of tutoring, learning group, course-embedded tutorial, and workshop supports focused on student English/literacy/study skills/academic needs ranging from general skill development to skill remediation of at-risk students.

The incumbent collaborates with faculty and staff to meet student academic needs.


Key responsibilities:


  • Leads, at their respective centre/location(s), the provision of literacy and English learning support programs and services tutoring, learning groups and workshops to college students.
  • Leads service development for literacy and English learning support programs and services online, particularly tutorials.
  • Leads provision of courseembedded tutorials by Peer Leaders.
  • Conducts ongoing research and implementation of best practices related to tutoring and literacy/English/language skill development and instructional design/online learning.
  • Hires, trains, schedules, supervises, and mentors student staff including peer leaders, peer tutors, and coop student assistants.
  • Tailors and further develops the TLC Tutor Training Development Program as per tutor role needs and in alignment with both the requirements of the International Tutor Training Program certification, hybrid and online deliveries, as well as best practices in the field.
  • Tailors and further develops the TLC Peer Leader Training program and training resources in alignment with the requirements of the TLC mandate, COMM curriculum, best practices of online and peer learning, writing skills development, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
  • Trains and provides ongoing mentorship to Peer Leaders for COMM tutorial support and materials, including regular weekly feedback on tutorial plans, presentations, and assignments.
  • Coordinates and delivers at their respective centre/location or oversees tutor delivery of workshops/learning groups/ inclass tutoring clinics to provide English/ESL and related academic skill development and remediation support to students.
  • Researches, identifies, and develops or oversees tutor development of reference material and tools (print and electronic resources, software, etc.)
  • Working with the TLC Manager, TLC Staff team, and college partners, assesses needs and opportunities, plans service delivery, and evaluates service effectiveness.
  • Uses a variety of digital tools and platforms (LMS, Teams, TLC tutoring platform, Office 365, etc.).
  • Supervises daytoday operations at their respective centre(s) and online.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Educational and Experience Requirements:


  • Fouryear diploma or degree from a recognized postsecondary institution in English, Adult Education, Second Language Education or equivalent, and Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) certification.
  • Minimum five (5) years of cumulative experience tutoring English and/or EnglishasaSecond Language in formal contexts of an adult education environment, including one year of experience in training, mentorship, supervision, or team leadership.
  • Knowledge of GBC policies and processes is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles of adult education.
