Learning Facilitator


The Learning Facilitator (LF) supports teaching and learning activities related to all initiatives and mandates of the Community Integration through Cooperative Education (CICE) program.

The primary role is to assist the CICE student to maximize their potential in postsecondary education.

The incumbent advocates, supports and acts on behalf of the CICE student with faculty, other College students and with College-wide service departments.

With standing instructions and in collaboration with and under the guidance of faculty, the LF develops strategies to support the CICE student's aptitude & skill and modifies course outlines, tests and assignments.

The LF provides accommodations for students using adaptive technologies as required and supports students with individual learning strategies & study skills, in some cases based on modified course outlines.

The LF provides administrative support to the CICE program and works to promote the program throughout Mohawk College and the broader community.


Responsibilities:

The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:


Provides academic support by:

Individual weekly meetings with CICE student(s)

  • Supporting each scheduled class by modifying class material to assist CICE student learning, in consultation with Faculty/Program Coordinator.
  • Providing academic guidance and recommendations for CICE students' course selection and program stream in consultation with the Program Coordinator.
  • Utilizing standing instructions from faculty and in collaboration with faculty modifies course outlines (learning outcomes, tests/exams and assignments) to meet individual student needs.
  • Extracting important concepts from the course content and modifying class material for CICE student use.
  • Developing skills profile study strategies for each CICE student in collaboration with faculty.
  • Providing academic advising and developing the path for CICE students' areas of focus with consultation with the Program Coordinator.
  • Assist in outside class learning (develop study guides, workshops, review questions or project outlines).
  • Using and supporting a variety of learning strategies (including notetaking, the use of adaptive technologies, computer program/software), and setting up and assisting with the use of adaptive equipment when needed (in and out of class).
  • Invigilating tests and exams (including verbal testing, alternate area from class, group testing).

Acts as a liaison between CICE students, college faculty and staff by:


  • Providing a smooth transition for CICE students into college/academic life.
  • Attending classes with CICE student to promote smooth integration with other students and faculty.
  • Meeting with teachers to promote inclusion of CICE students in the classroom.
  • Setting up a buddy system between CICE students and other students in the class.
  • Promoting inclusion of CICE students in College social activities.
  • Advising CICE students in solving problems such as accessing appropriate college resources (Financial Aid, Centre for Students with Disabilities, Counseling, lockers, purchasing books, OSAP, insurance opt out, student ID, etc.).
  • Advising other members of the CICE Team of any changes or strategies that have been implemented for CICE students.
  • Planning the transition week prior to semester startup.
  • Monitoring absences and other issues and bringing escalating concerns to the attention of the CICE Coordinator.

Assisting the program with administrative duties:


  • Support Coordinator/Program in semester scheduling of Academic Experiences.
  • Support CICE program with maintaining student records, CICE Team eLearn page, etc.
  • Organizing weekly meetings and other events for CICE program staff.
  • Tracking/filing and recording program documents and other pertinent program information for future reference by staff.

Working with the CICE team, the incumbent assists with admissions by:


  • Attending and supporting Open Houses and Program Information Nights.
  • Evaluating applicant submissions and making recommendation to the Coordinator/Associate Dean.
  • Conducting admission interviews and student orientation/trans
