Designated Substances Technician


Location:
Confederation Education Centre HS: 1645 Woodroffe Ave, Nepean


Position Status: 100% Regular, 12 Month Work Year


Hours of Work:
Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week


Salary range:
ESP Level 8 - $ 54,674 to $ 70,594


Effective:
January 9, 2023


Under the direction of the Supervisor, Occupational Health and Safety, the Designated Substances Technician is involved in various activities in support of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) OH&S management system, including the inspection and evaluation of designated substances, interpretation of technical reports and information, provision of advice and guidance related to designated substances and maintenance of detailed records and other related health and safety duties.

Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field.

3-5 years experience in occupational health and safety; with direct experience managing asbestos and other designated substances. Experience working in a unionized environment is considered an asset.


Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario and associated Regulations (particularly those related to designated substances), Ontario Environmental Protection Act and Regulations, and other relevant Acts, Regulations, Standards and OCDSB policies and procedures.


Ability to interpret technical reports related to designated substances, identify errors or omissions, and transfer critical information into a central record.

Communication Skills, including writing and verbal communications (to clients inside and outside of the organization. Written communication skills for preparing correspondence, reports, training materials.

Ability to make presentations and conduct training/workshops;
Ability to use tact, diplomacy and discretion in daily interactions.

Good judgment and recognizes potential hazardous situations and recommend a course of action.

Organization and time management skills required for prioritizing multiple deadlines and demands.

Ability to work with mínimal supervision.

Access to reliable transportation for travel between OCDSB
