- Handle independent authority, responsibility, and liability (mandatory to have liability insurance by law) to prepare, process, and compound prescriptions, which includes:
- Receive and transcribe verbal prescriptions from practitioners (excluding verbal narcotic prescriptions and benzodiazepines)
- Ensure the completeness and authenticity of prescriptions
- Transfer prescriptions to and from other pharmacies
- Assure the accuracy of prepared prescriptions
- Conduct the final check of prepared prescriptions
- Guarantee the accuracy of drug and personal health information in patient records
- A pharmacist has evaluated the prescription, the patient, the patient's health history, and medication record, confirming that the drug therapy is suitable for the patient, and a pharmacist must be present to advise the patient and supervise the patient's drug therapy before the prescription is handed over to the patient.
- Completion of the Pharmacy Technician Certification
- Proficiency in MS Word and Excel
- Above-average oral and written communication abilities
- Strong organizational aptitude and attention to detail
- Prior experience with Lawtons Drugs/Sobeys Pharmacy Computer systems preferred
- Relevant post-secondary education is an asset
- Exceptional customer service aptitude

Overview
The Registered Pharmacy Technician role is a controlled position that mandates the individual to hold a license from the provincial pharmacy board. Apart from all the tasks executed by a pharmacy assistant, the RPT can perform specific restricted activities under the indirect supervision of a pharmacist. The authorized responsibilities of the technician are constrained by legal regulations set by individual Provincial Pharmacy Regulatory Bodies. It is imperative for both pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to be fully aware of the functions that can be carried out by the RPT and the tasks that are off-limits.
